HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF KENTUCKY, C. S. ARMY,
Camp near Bardstown, Ky., October 7, 1862.
Pickets and guards will pass Edward T. Tillotson, a prisoner of war, through our lines to the Ohio River.
By order of Major-General Bragg:
J. M. ARNOLD,
Lieutenant, Commanding Second Texas Rangers.
Oath of allegiance.
I solemnly swear without any mental reservation or evasion that I will support the constitution of the Confederate States and the laws made in pursuance thereof. That I will not take up arms against the Confederate States or give aid or comfort or furnish information directly or indirectly to any person or persons belonging to any of the United States, who are now at war with the Confederate States, and that I will not write or speak against the Government of the said Confederate States: So help me God. It is understood that the penalty for the violation of this parole is death.
E. T. TILLOTSON.
On reaching the Indiana shore for the first time I learned of the Indian raids in Minnesota. I hastened to the home I left in Wright County eight months ago and found my family, consisting of wife and four children, nowhere to be found. After much trouble I learned they were in Minneapolis, where last night I found them, amongst other refugees, subsisting on the charity of the citizens. Everything at home has been destroyed. I am much worn from exposure and hardship, but hold myself subject to the orders of your department. The reason I have not reported myself in person I think is apparent to every husband and father.
I am, very respectfully, yours,
E. T. TILLOTSON.

SPECIAL ORDERS,
HDQRS. NORTHEAST MISSOURI DIVISION, Numbers 35.
Macon City, Mo., September 23, 1862.
Charles Tillotson having once been in arms in rebellion against the lawful Government, and having been pardoned for that offense and taken a solemn oath not again to take up arms against the United States were afterwards found in arms as member of a guerrillas band and taken prisoners, and in accordance with the laws of war will be shot at or near Huntsville, Mo., on Friday, the 26th instant, between the hours of 10 a. m. and 3 p. m., having incurred the just penalty of a violated parole and willful and intentional perjury. This sentence will be duly carried into execution by the commanding officer of the troops at Huntsville, for which this shall be this warrant.
The prisoner will be blindfolded and made to kneel before the firing parties, and the commanding officer gives the order. "Ready! aim! fire!" Six men must be detailed as a reserve whose duty it will be to finish the execution of the prisoner who may not be killed by the first discharge.
Instructed your firing party that they are simply discharging their duty, and however disagreeable it may be it is a duty, and they will show mercy to the prisoner by aiming true at the heart that the first fire may kill him. I hope, major, that the this solemn execution of a sentence and vindication of violated law may be properly conducted, and that both yourself and your men will do their duty faithfully however unpleasant it may be.
