Ships Of The World In War-1792-1815

This is about ships of the world in peace time and war all these ships had seaman impressed from them. As there will be a lot of ships names I will only post the ships name here however the information that can be provided is Masters or Captains name, where the vessel was from, The name of the vessel they were stopped by, and the nation that the vessel belong to. Some times the name of the owners and sometimes added information. If you need any information just write to me at: dsegelquist1@cox.net

American side.

When ever they found a British native, a seaman who had been born in Britain regardless of what he claimed to be (e.g. American), he was forced (impressed) into the British Navy. The American government protested this practice and issued Protection Certificates, but these were largely ignored. Some documentation of this practice may be found in the American State Papers.

British side.

The Jay Treaty of 1794 had attempted to clear up some of the lingering problems of American separation from Great Britain. However it made no mention of the impressment of American sailors. During the Noapoleonic Wars the Royal Navy aggressively reclaimed British deserters on board ships of other nations, both by halting and searching merchant ships, and in many cases, by searching American port cities. The Royal Navy did not recognize naturalized Amercian citizenship, treating anyone born a British subject as "British" — as a result, the Royal Navy impressed over 6,000 sailors during the early 1800s who were claimed as American citizens as well as British subjects. This was one of several factors leading to the War of 1812 in North America. Ironically, the Royal Navy largely ceased to use impressment after the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, though it remained legal to conduct.

Note. Here are three examples of the information you may receive.

1. On Aug. 2, 1796, the schooner Ann from Jeremic, under master E. D. Browm was stopped by the British ship Argonaut under the command of Ball, at Iris Bay, Hispaniola.

2. On Jan. 23, 1797, a protest was mad in be half of the ship Independence of New London under the master of Ichabod Goodrich for being stopped and boarded by the British ship of war Ceres on Jan. 22, 1797.

3. On April 2, 1806 it was recorded that the ship Echo from New York, N. Y., under the master of John Peck was stopped at Yarmounth roads by the war ship Elephant even though they had evidence of citizen ship, and protection from the custom house of Norfolk No. 300.

Important note. As this is about the ships I have left off the names of those impressed seamen. For those of you who are just looking for a seamen name you may ask at the above address.
