Happenings In the Iowa companies, Civil War.

Here is a list of Iowa men, who had bad things happing to them. Some were shot, some drowned and others were wounded, while others died from accidents.

Levi F. Brewington, Private, Iowa Second Infantry, Company G., Age 18, residence Keosauqua, Nativity of Ireland, Enlisted December 14, 1861, accidentally wounded in hand. Discharged for wound June 13, 1862.

Frederick Sick, Private, Iowa Second Infantry, Company B., Age 34, residence Iowa City, Nativity of Germany, Enlisted August 22, 1862, Mustered in Same day. Drowned accidentally March 26, 1864, Pulaski, Tennessee. Buried in Stone River National Cemetery.

Albert E. Winchell, Corporal, Second Iowa Infantry, Company I., Age 20, residence Lyons, Nativity New York, Enlisted May 5, 1861, as fourth Corporal, Mustered in May 28, 1861, Accidentally shot while asleep by a comrade on the occasion of a false alarm while company was expecting a night attack from the rebels near St. Joseph Mo. June 11, 1861. Died June 22, 1861, near St. Joseph Mo.

Alfred Francis, Corporal, Third Iowa Infantry, Company G., Age 34, residence Green Bush, Nativity New York, Enlisted May 21, 1861, Mustered in May 8, 1861, promoted seventh corporal April 22, 1861, Second Corporal August 26, 1862. Accidentally wounded in left hand November 7, 1862. Mustered out June 18, 1864, Davenport Iowa, expiration of term of service.

Luther Griggs, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Company K., Age 21, residence Cedar Falls, Enlisted May 21, 1861, Mustered in June 8, 1861. Accidentally killed by gun in hands of comrade December 2, 1861, Benton Barracks, St Louis Mo. Buried National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks Mo.

James McManus, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Company A., Age 20, residence Dubuque county, Nativity Ireland. Enlisted May 1861, Mustered in June 6, 1861. Accidentally killed by a comrade, November 15, 1861, at St, Louis Mo.

Joseph Berry, Private, Fourth Iowa Infantry, Company B., Age 34, residence Cass county, Nativity Pennsylvania, Enlisted July 10, 1861, Mustered in August 8, 1861. Wounded on picket duty September 26, 1861, Rolla Mo. Wounded accidentally January of 1862. Died of accidental wounds January 9, 1862, Rolla Mo.

Ashael A. Mather, Private, Fourth Iowa Infantry, Company E., Age 29, residence Michigan, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted July 15, 1861, Mustered in August 8, 1861. Accidentally shot by sentinel October 20, 1861. Died October 20, 1861, Rolla Mo. Buried National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks Mo.

Alfred P. Alexander, Corporal, Sixth Iowa Infantry, Company A., Age 28, residence Marion, Nativity Indiana, Enlisted July 1, 1861, as fourth corporal, Mustered in July 17, 1861. Promoted third corporal, November 1,1861. Accidentally wounded in hand, November1, 1861. Promoted Second Corporal, December 1, 1861, fourth Sergeant July 1, 1862. Discharged January 5, 1863, for disability.

Benjamin B. Gale, Sergeant, seventh Iowa Infantry, Company D., Age 28, residence Fort Madison, Nativity Massachusetts, Enlisted July 12, 1861, as a First Sergeant. Mustered in July 25, 1861. Promoted Second Lieutenant October 1, 1861. Saber cut in head November 7, 1861, Belmont Mo. Promoted First Lieutenant July 22, 1862. Captain September 15, 1863. Wounded severely in right side October 3, 1862, Corinth, Mississippi. Wounded accidentally revolver May 27, 1864. Resigned August 3, 1864.

Dennis A. Morrison, Private, Seventh Iowa Infantry, Company D., Age 23, residence Lee county, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted September 16, 1862, Mustered in September 16, 1862. Wounded accidentally while on picket duty, November 22, 1862, Promoted Fifth Sergeant, January 5, 1865. Mustered out May 26, 1865. Expiration of service.

Jonathan W. Hopkins, Corporal ( Veteran ), Eightn Iowa Infantry, Company G., Age 22, residence Danforth, Nativity Pennsylvania, Enlisted September 3, 1861, as First Corporal, Mustered in September 30, 1861. Promoted fifth Sergeant December 1, 1863. Reenlist and re-mustered January 11, 1864. Accidentally shot and killed while on Veteran furlough, March 22, 1864, Davenport Iowa.

Charles Blanchard, Private, Eighth Iowa Infantry, Company H., Age 27, residence Oskaloosa, nativity Illinois. Enlisted August 12, 1861, Mustered in September 12, 1861. Promoted Fourth Sergeant November 1, 1861, Wounded and taken prisoner April 6, 1862, Shiloh Tennessee. Supposed to have been murdered in St. Louis Mo., while an exchange prisoner.

Abram Pratt, Private ?, Eighth Iowa Infantry, Company D., Age 40, Residence Benton county, Nativity Pennsylvania, Enlisted January 5, 1864, Mustered in same day. Murdered on the night of October 3, 1865, Tuskegee Ala. Buried in the National Cemetery at Marietta Ga.

William Stephenson. Private, Sixth Iowa Infantry, Company A., Age 36, Residence Marion, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted July 1, 1861, Mustered in July 17, 1861. Dishonorably drummed out of company by General Court Martial, August 16, 1862.

Andrew J. Ewing, Private, Seventh Iowa Infantry, Company E., Age 32, Residence Hancock county Illinois, Nativity Ohio. Enlisted July 12, 1861, Mustered in July 25, 1861. Drummed out of service by Court Martial, October 16, 1861, Bird’s Point Missouri.

Charles T. Trowbridge, Private, Eighth Iowa Infantry, Company G., Age 19, Residence Iowa county, Nativity New York. Enlisted September 27, 1861, Mustered in same day. Dishonorably discharged, September 28, 1864, by General Court Martial.

Charles Henke, Private, First Iowa Infantry, Company H., Age 25, Residence Dubuque, Nativity Hamburg. Enlisted April 23, 1861, Mustered in Mat 13, 1861. Supposed to have drowned in Grand River Missouri, as he was missing and a body was seem to sink in the river.

Henry C. Wheeler, Private, Second Iowa Infantry, Company C., Age 20, Residence Davenport, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted April 24, 1861, Mustered in May 28, 1861. Drowned August 11, 1861, Mississippi River. Fell from Steamer Memphis, near Herculaneum Mo. Body not found.

Robert A. Blythe, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Company G., Age 28, Residence Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Nativity Pennsylvania. Enlisted May21, 1861. Muster in June 8, 1861. Drowned March 7, 1882, St, Louis Mo.

Gilbert E. Egge, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Company D., Age 21, Residence Winneshiek county, Nativity Norway, Enlisted May 30, 1861, Mustered in June 8, 1861. Drowned in Wolf river, near Memphis Tennessee, while bathing.

William Bauder, Private, Second Iowa Infantry, Company E., Age 19, Residence Primrose, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted May 6, 1861, Mustered in May 28, 1861. Died on the morning of July 3, 1861, by falling from the deck to the bow of the Steamer D. A., January breaking his neck.

Edward M. Barlow, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Company G., Age 22, Residence Indianola, Nativity Indiana, Enlisted May 21, 1861, Mustered in June 8, 1861. Wounded slightly in face, April 6, 1862, Shiloh Tennessee. Wounded in right arm slightly May 18, 1863, on steamer Crescent City, near Island No. 82. Mustered out June 18, 1864, Davenport, Iowa.

John C. Carr, Third Iowa Infantry, Company H., Age 23, Residence Monroe, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted June 1, 1861, as a Third Corporal, Mustered in June 8, 1861. Promoted Fifth Sergeant, July19, 1862, Fourth Sergeant November 21, 1862. Wounded in right hand slightly near Island No. 82. May 18, 1863, on steamer Crescent City. Mustered out June 10, 1864, Davenport, Iowa.

Justus Dunn, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Companies E. & A., Age 23, Residence Jasper county, Nativity Ohio, Enlisted May 21, 1861, Mustered in June 8, 1861. Wounded in left leg May18, 1863, at Island No 82., on steamer Crescent City. Reenlisted and Re-mustered in December 17, 1863.

Reuben K. Kline, Private, Third Iowa Infantry, Company B., Residence Marysville, Nativity Pennsylvania, Enlisted May21, 1861, Mustered in June10, 1861. Taken prisoner while foraging February 20, 1863. Return to company March 6, 1863. Wounded slightly in right hand, near Island No. 82, May 15, 1863, on steamer Crescent City. Mustered out June 18, 1864, Davenport, Iowa.
