More Names Of The Continental Army.

I hope you enjoy reading about these men, they served their State and country with honor, Many of these men were wounded while in service. I had no reason on why I picked these names only in that I liked the sound of them and I thought there service record was interesting reading. All these men were officers, some however first held the rank of private then moved up the ranks. Look for my other list ( Names of the Continental Army ) there are many more men to read about.

Note. Many dates and places are unknown because of the destruction of the papers of the War Office in 1801 and 1814.

State of Virginia.

1. Thomas Coverly or Coverley.
Service record.
Thomas was a Ensign of the 9th. Virginia regiment on November 7, 1776, became a Lieutenant on May 26, 1778, then was transferred to the 5th. Virginia on September 14, 1778, and served till----. Died on September 22, 1827.
Pension Rolls.
Thomas Coverly or Coverley was from Virginia and of the county of Amella. The rolls state he was a Ensign and had a allowance of $120, dollars per year and had received $3,638, dollars, was of the 9th. Virginia regiment, and was placed on the rolls April 23, 1787, and commencement of his pension started January 7, 1787. He was on the rolls for a second time with an allowance of $156, dollars and had received $381.76, dollars and commencement began April 24,1816, it was and increase in his pension. He was on the rolls for a third time with an allowance of $240, dollars and had received $339.33, dollars commencement began October 5, 1818, he was drooped from the rolls. He was on the rolls for a fourth time a allowance of $156, dollars and had received $1,092, dollars, was placed back on the rolls on September 26, 1820, commencement began on March 4, 1820, he had been reinstated to invalid rolls, he died on September 22, 1827.

2. John Holcomb or Holcombe.
Service record.
Was a 1st, Lieutenant of the 4th, Virginia February 19, 1776, became a Captain on January 1, 1777 and held that rank till March 25, 1779.
Pension Rolls.
John Holcomb was of the state of Virginia and the county of Campbell, was a Captain of the 4th, Virginia regiment, his allowance was $180, dollars per year, he had received $1,681.50, dollars. No date on when he was placed on the rolls. His commencement of his pension began on December 1, 1807.

3. William Barrett.
Service record.
William Barrett was a 1st, Lieutenant in the 3rd, continental dragoons April 10, 1778. Became a Captain in May of 1779, retained in Baylor’s consolidated regiment of dragoons November 9, 1782, and served to the close of the war.
Pension Rolls.
Note. He was in Virginia at time this information was recorded.
William Barrett was a Captain, the commencement of his pension began September 4, 1789, his allowance was $25 per year and had received $150, dollars.

State of Delaware.

4. Edward Armstrong.
Service record.
Was a 1st. Lieutenant of Malcolm’s additional continental regiment, April 5, 1777, retired April 25, 1779.
Pension Rolls.
There is little information on Edward Armstrong other then he was from New York but now living in the state of Delaware, county New Castle, it gives his rank as a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary Army. The rolls state his allowance per year was $160, dollars and had received $4,342.52, dollars and that he had died in May 14, 1824.

5. John Corse.
Service record.
John Corse was from Delaware, county of Kent, was a Ensign in a Delaware regiment, January of 1776. He was wounded on Long Island on august 27, 1776. Became a 1st, lieutenant on December 3, 1776, Made captain March 1, 1776.
Pension Roll.
The pension roll states he was a Captain and living in the state of Delaware, in the county of Kent, his rank was that of a Captain, and was in the Continental Line, he was placed on the rolls on July28, 1818, and commencement began on June 6, 1818, his allowance was $240, dollars per year and had received $419.24, dollars, at the time this was recorded he was 84, years.

6. Caleb P. Bennett.
Service record.
Was from the state of Delaware, of the county of New Castle. Held the rank of Ensign in a Delaware regiment, April 5, 1777, became a 2nd., Lieutenant August 16, 1778, took rank of 1st., Lieutenant 1780 and served till the end of the war.
Pension Roll.
The roll states he held the rank of a Lieutenant, and was on the Delaware Continental Line. He was placed on the roll May 13, 1818, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year and had received $458.58, dollars. The commencement of his pension was April 7, 1818, at the time this was recorded he was 61. In the remarks it states that he was drooped from the rolls under the act of May 1, 1820.

7. David Kirkpatrick.
Service record.
David Kirkpatrick was from New York, now living in the state of Delaware in the county of New Castle, was a Ensign of Malcolm’s Additional Continental regiment, April 24, 1777. Transferred April 22, 1779 to Spencer’s regiment, became a Lieutenant April 22, 1779. Retired January 1, 1781. Reinlisted July 25, 1781, was a Captain of the Sappers and Miners, was wounded at Yorktown October 14, 1781, served till June 3, 1783.
Pension Roll.
David Kirkpatrick held the rank of a Captain & Lieutenant and served on the New Jersey Continental Line, his allowance was $240, dollars per year and had received $458.58, dollars. He was placed on the roll May 14, 1818, the commencement of his pension was April 7, 1818. At the time this was recorded he was 79. In the remarks it states that he was drooped from the roll under the act of May 1, 1820.

State of Maryland.

8. Richard Anderson
Service record.
Richard Anderson was from the State of Maryland, county of Frederick, he held the rank of a 1st., Lieutenant of the 1st., Maryland Battalion of the flying camp, August 1776, on December 10, 1776 was a 1st., Lieutenant of the 7th., Maryland, became a Captain November 15, 1777, transferred to the 4th. Maryland January 1, 1781. Wounded at the cow pens January 17, 1781, retired January 1, 1782.
Pension Roll.
Richard Anderson held the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary Army, was from the state of Maryland, county of Frederick, placed on the roll October 30, 1819, with a allowance of $240, dollars per year had received $5,562.66, dollars. His commencement of his pension was January 1, 1803. In the remarks it states that he died on June 20, 1835.

9. Roger Nelson.
Service record. Roger Nelson was from Maryland, county of Frederick, held the rank of 2nd. Lieutenant of the 5th., Maryland 1779; became a 1st., Lieutenant July 15, 1780; wounded and taken prisoner at Camden August 16, 1780; exchanged December of 1780. Transferred to Baylor’s regiment Continental dragoons November 9, 1782, and served till the end of the war.
Pension Roll.
Roger Nelson was from the state of Maryland, county of Frederick, held the rank of Lieutenant of the Cavalry of the Revolutionary Army, was placed on the roll May 31, 1815, with a n allowance of $200, dollars per year and had received $2,552.21, dollars, commencement of his pension began September 4, 1802. In the remarks it states that he died on June 7, 1815.

State of Pennsylvania.

10. Jacob Shartel.
Service record. Jacob Shartel was a Captain of Hartley’s Additional Continental regiment 1777; wounded by Indians at Muncey Creek, Pennsylvania in 1778.

Jacob Shartel was from Pennsylvania, county of Bucks; held the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary Army, placed on the pension roll date unknown had an allowance of $120, dollars per year, had received $2,940.33, dollars. Commencement of his pension was September 4, 1793.

11. James Glentworth.
Service Record.
James Glentworth was from Pennsylvania, county of Philadelphia, held the rank of 1st. Lieutenant of the 6th., Pennsylvania February 11, 1777; wounded at Paramus, April 16, 1780; transferred to the 2nd., Pennsylvania January 1, 1783 and served to June 3, 1783.
Pension Roll.
James Glentworth was from Pennsylvania, county Philadelphia, held the rank of Lieutenant in the Revolutionary Army, date placed on pension roll unknown, had an allowance of $80., dollars per year and had received $1,065.28, dollars. Commencement of his pension was January 1, 180.

12. James Irvine.
Service Record.
James Irvine was from Pennsylvania, county of Philadelphia, held the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st., Pennsylvania Battalion November 25, 1775; Colonel of the 9th., Pennsylvania October 25, 1776; transferred to the 2nd., Pennsylvania March 26, 1777. Brigadier General militia August 26, 1777; wounded and taken prisoner at Chestnut Hill, December 5, 1777; exchanged June 1, 1781; Major General Pennsylvania militia May 27, 1782 to the end of the war.
Pension Roll.
James Irvine was from Pennsylvania, county of Philadelphia, held the rank of Brigadier General of the Revolutionary Army, date he was placed on the roll is unknown, he had an allowance of $540., dollars per year and had received $15,661.50., dollars, commencement of his pension was March 4, 1785. In the remarks it stated that he died April 28, 1819.

13. Matthew McConnell was from the state of Pennsylvania, county of Philadelphia, held the rank of 2nd., Lieutenant of the Thompson’s Pennsylvania Rifle Battaltion june 25, 1775; 2nd., Lieutenant of the 1st., Continental Infantry January 1,1776; transferred to the 2nd. Canadian ( Hazen’s ) regiment November 3, 1776. Became a Captain on April 8, 1777; transferred to Invalid regiment February 12, 1781, and served to the end of the war.
Pension Roll.
Matthew McConnell was from the state of Pennsylvania, county of Philadelphia, held the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary Army, date he was placed on the roll is unknown, had an allowance of $180., dollars per year and had received $2,375.50., dollars, commencement of his pension began on January 1, 1803. In the remark it states he died on March 11, 1816.

State of New Jersey.

14. Garretson or Garetson Hendrickson.
Service record.
Garretson Hendrickson was from New Jersey, county unknown, held the rank of 1st., Lieutenant in the New Jersey militia September 25, 1777; wounded at Middletown New Jersey June 12, 1780.
Pension Roll.
Garretson Hendrickson was from New Jersey, county unknown, held the rank of Lieutenant of the revolutionary Army, date he was placed on the roll is unknown he had an allowance of $120., dollars per year and had received $1,535.85., dollars his commencement of his pension was on March 4, 1789. In the remarks it stated that he died December 21, 1801.

15. John Sparks Jr.
Service record.
John Sparks was from the state of New Jersey, county of Salem held the rank of Ensign of the 2nd. New Jersey November 11, 1775; became a 2nd., Lieutenant May 10, 1776, then a 1st., Lieutenant on February 5, 1777; Captain January 1, 1778. Resigned August 31, 1778.
Pension roll.
John Sparks was from the state of New Jersey, county of Salem held the rank of Captain of the New Jersey Line, was placed on the roll July 28, 1818, with an allowance of $240., dollars per year, and had received $1945.80., dollars. Commencement of his pension was April 23, 1818, at the time this was recorded he was 69. In the remarks it states that he died on April 30, 1826.

16. Cornelius Hennion.
Service record.
Cornelius Hennion is from the state of New Jersey, county unknown is a Ensign of the 3rd. New Jersey, February 7, 1716, became a 2nd., Lieutenant July 19, 1776, then a 1st., Lieutenant on November 29, 1776, became a Captain November 1, 1777; was Severely wounded at Short Hill June 26, 1777; Resigned April 1, 1778.
Pension.
Cornelius Hennion is from the state of New Jersey, county unknown, held the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary War, date he was placed on the roll is unknown, had an allowance of $120., dollars pre year and had received $1,320., dollars. Commencement of his pension was March 4, 1789. In the remarks it stated he died March 28, 1800.

17. Uzal Meeker or Micker.
Service record.
Uzal Meeker is of the state of New Jersey, county of Bergen, was a Ensign of Spencer’s Additional Continental regiment February 10, 1777, became a 2nd. Lieutenant November 1, 1779; was a 1st., Lieutenant February 10, 1779, retired January 1, 1781.

Uzal Meeker is of the state of New Jersey, county of Bergen, held the rank of 2nd., Lieutenant, placed on the roll April 20, 1819, at an allowance of $240., dollars per year, had received $1,320., dollars. Commencement of his pension was on April 22, 1818. At the time this was recorded he was 65. In the remarks it states he died on September 3 1829.

State of New York.

18. Henry Lewis.

Henry Lewis is of the State of New York, county of Montgomery, was an Ensign in Vischer’s regiment New York Militia; wounded at Oriskany August 6, 1777.

Henry Lewis is of the State of New York, county of Montgomery, held the rank of Ensign in the Revolutionary Army, was placed on the roll in September of 1794, with an allowance of $30., dollars per year, and had received $667.50, dollars. Commencement of his pension was on September 24, 1793. He had an increase in his pension and was placed on the roll again on February 1, 1823, with an allowance of $39, dollars per year, and had received $638.03, dollars. The commencement of the increase started April 24, 1816.

19. Caleb Brewster
Service record.
Caleb Brewster was from the State of New York, county of New York, he held the rank of Ensign of the 4th., New York November 21, 1776; became 1st., Lieutenant of the 2nd. Continental Artillery January 1, 1777; was Captain Lieutenant June 23, 1780; was wounded at Long Island Bay December 1782; served to June of 1783.

Caleb Brewster was from the State of New York, county of New York, held the rank of Lieutenant of the United States Army, was placed on the roll November 3, 1783, with an allowance of $200, dollars per year and had received $7,396.10, dollars, Commencement of his pension was on November 3, 1783. He had an increase in his pension on April 26, 1820, with an allowance of $204, dollars per year had received $1,386.63, commencement began on April 26, 1820. In the remarks it states that he died on February 13, 1827.

20. Job Bartram.

Job Bartram was from Connecticut, now living in New York, county unknown, held the rank of Captain in the Connecticut Militia, was wounded at Fairfield July 7, 1779.

Job Bartram was from Connecticut, now living in New York, county unknown, held the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary Army, date he was placed on the roll is unknown, his allowance was $120, dollars per year, amount received is unknown, commencement of his pension was on March 4, 1794. In the remarks it states he transferred from Connecticut on April 20, 1795. On October 8, 1811, he had an increase to his pension his allowance now was $180, dollars per year, the amount received is unknown. In the remarks it states he died on July 19, 1813.

21. Selah Benton.
Service Record.
Selah Benton was from Connecticut, now living in New York county unknown, was a Ensign of the 19th., Continental Infantry January 1, 1776; 2nd., Lieutenant June 30, 1776; 1st., Lieutenant of the 8th., Connecticut January 1, 1777; Captain August 21, 1780; transferred to the 5th., Connecticut January 1, 1781; transferred to the 1st., Connecticut January 1, 1783, and served to June 3, 1783.

Selah Benton was from Connecticut, now living in New York county unknown, held the rank of Captain in the Revolutionary Army, date he was placed on the roll is unknown, his allowance was $240, dollars per year the amount he received is unknown, commencement of his pension was on July 1, 1811. In the remarks it states he died on May 12, 1812.

State of Maine.

22. Park Holland.

Park Holland was from Massachusetts, but now living in Maine, county of Penobscot. Entered as a Private in Holman’s regiment in 1776, became a Ensign of the 5th., Massachusetts November 7, 1777; Lieutenant October 18, 1780 and served to June 3, 1783.

Park Holland was from Massachusetts, but now living in Maine, county of Penobscot. Held the rank of Lieutenant of the Massachusetts Line, was placed on the roll April 10, 1819, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year, he had received $1,658.40, dollars. His commencement of his pension was April 4, 1818, at the time this was recorded he was 76. In the remarks it states that he died on May 21, 1844.

23. Samuel Benjamin.

Samuel Benjamin is from Massachusetts but now living in Maine, county of Oxford, became a Ensign of the 8th., Massachusetts January 1, 1777; 2nd., Lieutenant October 3, 1775; 1st., Lieutenant March 28, 1779 and served to June 1783.

25. Moses Banks.

Moses Banks, Quarter-master of the 18th., Connecticut Infantry January 1, 1776; cashiered July 24, 1776.

Moses Banks was from Massachusetts but now living in Maine county unknown. Held the rank of Lieutenant of the Massachusetts Continental Line; placed on the roll May 11,1819, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year had received $1,334, dollars. Commencement of his pension was August 18, 1818, at the time this was recorded he was 88. In the remarks it states that he died October 10, 1823.

State of New Hampshire.

26. William Taggart.

William Taggart, Ensign of the 2nd., New Hampshire November 8, 1776; 2nd., Lieutenant December 29, 1777; wounded at Ticonderoga July 6, 1777; Lost his sight by small-pox in 1778; resigned February 6, 1780.

Commencement of pension March 4, 1795, in the remarks it states April 20, 1796.

William Taggart, of the state of New Hampshire county of Hillsborough, Ensign in the Revolutionary Army, placed on the roll October 27, 1796, with an allowance of $78, dollars per year and had received $257.80, dollars, commencement of pension April 24, 1816. In the remarks it states, Increased by act of April 24, 1816.
3. Pension roll.
William Taggart, of the state of New Hampshire county of Hillsborough, Ensign in the Revolutionary Army, placed on the roll November 16, 1819, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year had received $103.91, dollars, commencement of pension was September 19, 1819. In the remarks it states, relinquished for benefits of act March 1818. Dropped under act May 1, 1820, and reinstated on invalid roll under act May 1, 1820.
4. Pension Roll.
William Taggart, of the state of New Hampshire county of Hillsborough, Ensign in the Revolutionary Army, placed on the roll March 4, 1820, with an allowance of $78, dollars per year had received $783.68, dollars, commencement of pension was March 4, 1820. In the remarks it states that he died on March 21, 1830.

27. Joseph Hilton.
Service Record.
Joseph Hilton, held the rank of 2nd., Lieutenant of the 3rd., New Hampshire regiment, November 8, 1776; wounded at Stillwater in October 7, 1777; retired September 1, 1778.
Pension. Joseph Hilton was from the state of New Hampshire, county of Rockingham. Held the rank of Lieutenant in Scammell’s regiment, was placed on the roll August 9, 1796, with an allowance of $80, dollars per year and had received $1,691.23, dollars. Commencement of his pension was March 4, 1795. Had a increase in his pension on April 20, 1796, his allowance now was $104, dollars per year and had received $1,101.52, dollars. In the remarks it stated that he died on November 26, 1826.

28. Andrew McGaffy or McGaffey
Service Record.
Andrew McGaffey is from New Hampshire county of Strafford, held the rank of Sergeant of the New Hampshire regiment from May to December 1775; wounded at Banker’s Hill June 17, 1775; became 2nd. Lieutenant of Wingate’s New Hampshire Militia regiment, June to November 1776; 1st. Lieutenant of the 3rd. New Hampshire November 8, 1776; discharged June 1, 1779.
Pension.
Andrew McGaffey is from New Hampshire county of Strafford, held the rank of Lieutenant of the 3rd. New Hampshire, was placed on the roll date unknown his allowance is $106.66 and two thirds, dollars per year has received $3,301.60, dollars. Commencement of his pension was on July31,1786. He had an increase of his pension on April 24, 1816, his allowance now is $138.66 and two thirds, dollars per year has received $1,293.02, dollars.

29. Nathan Sanborn.
Service Record.
Nathan Sanborn, was Captain of Evan’s regiment New Hampshire August 1776 to October 1777; wounded at Bemis Heights September 19, 1777.
Pension Roll.
Nathan Sanborn is from Hew Hampshire, county unknown, date placed on roll unknown, service unknown, his pension allowance was $40, dollars per year had received $1,017.76, dollars. Commencement of pension March 4, 1789. In the remarks it ststes that he died on August 13, 1814.

State of Massachusetts.

30. Joshua Danforth

Joshua Danforth, was a Corporal in the 12th., Massachusetts May 15, 1777; Sergeant January 1, 1778; Ensign November 26, 1779; transferred to 2nd Massachusetts January 1, 1781, and served to June 3, 1783.

Joshua Danforth, is from Massachusetts county of Berkshire, held the rank of Lieutenant of the Massachusetts Line, was placed on the roll on June 30, 1818, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year, and had received $447.33, dollars. Commencement of pension was April 25, 1818, at the time this was recorded he was 60 years. In the remarks it states he died on January 3, 1837.

31. Azariah Eggleston or Egleston.

Azariah Eggleston, Sergeant of the 1st., Massachusetts January 1, 1777; Ensign May 1, 1777; Regimental Quartermaster May 4, 1780; Lieutenant August 30, 1780, and served to the close of the war.

Commencement of his pension was on May 6, 1818, at the time this was recorded he was 64, years. In the remarks it states he died on January 12, 1822.

32. Daniel S. Dexter, Lieutenant of the 1st., Rhode Island June 1, 1778; Regimental Adjutant May 1, 1779; Captain August 25, 1781, and served to the end of the war.

33. James Cooper.

Caleb Carr, was a Lieutenant in Richmond regiment Rhode Island Militia; Captain in August 19, 1776; Also Captain of Tallman’s regiment Rhode Island Militia, from December 1, 1776 to May of 1777.

Caleb Carr, was from the State of Rhode Island county of Bristol, held the rank of Captain on the Rhode Island Continental Line, was placed on the roll March 13,1821, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year had received $1,934, dollars. Commencement of his pension was on March 13, 1821, at the time this was recorded he was 80, years. In the remarks it states he died on April 3, 1829.

35. Joseph Cornell.

Joseph Cornell was an Ensign in the 1st., Rhode Island June 20, 1777; resigned May 20, 1779.
Pension Roll.
Joseph Cornell, was of the State of Rhode Island, county of Newport, held the rank of Ensign in the Rhode Island Continental Line, was placed on the roll July 28, 1818, with an allowance of $240, dollars per year and had received $1,680, dollars. Commencement of his pension was on April 7, 1812, at the time this was recorded he was 67, years. In the remarks it states he died on April 8. 1825.

36. Cyprian Sterry.
Service Record.
Cyprian Sterry, was a Ensign in Hitchcock’s Rhode Island regiment, from May 3, to December 1775; 2nd. Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster of the 11th. Continental Infantry from January 1, to December 31, 1776; Brigade-Major Rhode Island Brigade, from December 12 to December 31, 1776.
Pension Roll.
