The Impressed Seamen Of 1796-99.

If you had a ancestor at sea in the year of 1796-1799, and he was impressed by the British and you would like to know more, then this page may be a help to you. There were thousands of Americans and other seamen from other country’s sailing on these American ships and were impressed. Now I can’t possibly name them all but I will give his name and ship, and the rest of the information you will have to ask for. The following is the information you will receive:

Where the ship was from, The masters name, What State or country they were from, What ship impressed them and it's captain and the year and the date and Whether they had protections.

The impressed American Seaman.

Although these were American ships many of the crew were not Americans but were under the protection of the American laws. The British navy was on patrol of the seas and was on the look out for any ships from other nations and when one was found it was boarded and the crew looked over and any one they thought was a born British subject or for any reason they liked was taken and impressed into the British service, but not all were impressed into service many were sent to prison and held for ransom.

On August 2, 1796, the Schooner Ann, under the command of E. P. Brown, was stopped by the British ship Argonaut and Peter Vantuyl was taken and impressed.

On August 2, 1796, the ship Schooner Ann, under the command of E. P. Brown, was stopped by the British ship Argonaut and James Collins, was taken and impressed.

On August 3, 1796, the Brig Molly, under the command of Walter Midlen, was stopped by the Ceres frigate and John Rush who was born in Philadelphia was taken and impressed.

On August 8, 1796, the ship Amiable Creole under the command of James M’Kever was stopped by the ship Africa, and John Bane who was born in Ireland, was taken and impressed.

On August 15, 1796, the ship Active under the command of (?) Robertson, was stopped by a Press Gang and Philip Hay who was a citizen by residence was taken and impressed.

On August 18, the Brig Isabella and Ann under the command of George Hawkins was stopped by the Frigate Success and George M’Cormic, was taken and impressed.

On August 22, 1796, the Brig Fame under the command of Thos. Churnside was stopped by the Thetis and John White from the State of Delaware was taken and impressed.

On August 29, 1796, the ship Aurora under the command of Amasa Parker was stopped by the Sampson and James Mason who was born in Rhode Island and had a protection was taken and impressed.

On September 6, 1796, the Brig Governor Brook was under the command of Andrew Kelly and was stopped by the Drake sloop and John Malone who was born in Ireland and had no protection but had taken an oath of allegiance to the United States was taken and impressed.

On October 17, 1796, the ship Eagle was under the command of Kearney and was stopped and Thomas Jackson a Englishman was taken and impressed.

On October 13, 1796, the Ship Edward was under the command of Howlaud and was stopped and William Collet who was not known to be a citizen was taken and impressed.

On October 17, 1796, the ship Caroline was under the command of Hilton and was stopped and Jonathan Glover who was born in Massachusetts was taken and impressed.

On October 18, 1796, the Brig Friendship was under the command of Repley was stopped and Joseph Johnson who was born in Delaware was taken and impressed.

On October 18, 1796, the Brig Sea Nymph was under the command of Hastie was stopped and Isaac Lawrd who’s nationality was uncertain was taken and impressed.

On October 19, 1796, the Schooner Hannah was under the command of Phippen was stopped by the Thetis Frigate and John Smith who was born in Pennsylvania was taken and impressed.

On October 20, 1796, the ship Charlotte was under the command of Bell and was stopped and John McCarley who was born in Philadelphia was taken and impressed.

On November 19, 1796, the Schooner Dolphin was under the command of Tice and was stopped and Richard Lary who’s citizenship was uncertain was taken and impressed.

On November 19, 1796, the Brig Cincinnatus was under the command of Semple
and was stopped by the Resolution and Wm. McMullen, Mate, who Had sailed out of the U. S. since 1783, was taken and impressed.

On November 21, 1796, the Schooner Musquito was under the command of Hershau and was stopped by either the Frigate Thetis or Prevoyante and John McDonald who was born in New York and had protection but was taken and impressed.

In November of 1796, Thomas Cooper who was A foreigner and had protection was
on a American ship name unknown and was stopped by either the Frigate Thetis or Prevoyante and was taken and impressed.

In November of 1796, Negro George who was a native of Maryland was
on a American ship name unknown and was stopped by either the Frigate Thetis or Prevoyante and was taken and impressed.
In November of 1796, the Schooner Eagle was under the command of Dana and was stopped by a unknown ship and Lewis Rollen who was born in Rhode Island was taken and impressed.

On November 26, 1796, the Ship Old Tom was under the command of Flerron was stopped by a unknown ship and John Crafter who was born in Swede was taken and impressed.

Charles & Greenville Clay And George Caully.

Here is the Clay family they were taken prisoner in 1862. I would like to add some family information to this page, like who was his wife did he have any more children. The information will help fill in the gaps and help others who may be looking into this family. (I am not of this family I only wish to help others looking into this family.)

Charles Clay. -Aged sixty-three. Born in Virginia; has lived in Raleigh County twelve years. Says he is a secessionist and on the Southern side. Has two sons in Floyd's brigade, in Captains Pate's or Adams' companies. Has done all in his power for the families of volunteers in the Southern army. Does not know of what he is arrested. Says he went to hunt up some cattle and hogs driven by the wife of a volunteer into the mountains when the Northern troops went to Raleigh Court-House. Did not expect them to return so soon, but they met him in the road on his return home, took him prisoner, and compelled him to show them where they could cross the creek, and then discharged him. Says he never had anything to do with the Northern army or with the Union man, except in this instance. Says he has slept out in the mountains at night to avoid them. I examined Colonel Coleman, the member of the legislature of Virginia from Fayette [and] Raleigh, and Mr. McDonald, the member from Wyoming, and they neither knew enough of this man to say whether he was worthy of credit. I recommend his discharge on taking the oath of allegiance.

Greenville Clay. -Son of Charles Clay; does not know for what he was arrested. Never had any connection with the Northern army or the Union men. Once met a a squad of Yankees on the road. They asked him the condition of the bridges and passed. He had nothing to do with the Northern army or the Union men. Has two brothers in the Southern army, one in Captain Adams', the other in Captain Pate's company, Floyd's brigade. In the spring put in a crop in partnership with one of his brothers. It was afterwards agreed one of them should volunteer. His brother being unmarried, volunteered in Captain Pate's company. Has aided the families of the Southern volunteers by cutting their grain in harvest, and by other labor. I have examined Colonel Coleman and Mr. McDonald. They can throw no light on this case. I recommend his discharge on taking the oath of allegiance.

R. Clay. -A boy sixteen years of age, son of Charles Clay. Says he never had anything to do with the Northern army or with the Union men. I recommend his discharge on taking the oath of allegiance.

George Caully. -Son-in-law of Charles Clay. Says he is a secessionist. Has a brother in Adams' company in Floyd's brigade. Takes care of both families. Has had nothing to do with the Northern army or the Union men. Colonel Coleman and Mr. McDonald have no other knowledge of this man than that he lives in this neghborhood. I recommend his discharge on taking the oath of allegiance.
