Joshua Pickering, was born to Thomas Pickering and Mary ( Gee ) Pickering on November 28, 1703, in the town of Newington, in the county of Rockingham in the state of New Hampshire. His first marriage was to Deorah Smitson, on January 15, 1724. His second marriage was to Mary ( Brackett ) Pickering, both marriage were held at Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire. From these unions the following children were born.

Joshua Pickering will pass away on December 9, 1768, At Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire. The deaths of his wife’s is unknown. There is also some confusion on who the mother of the children was, some records say the Mary Brackett, was the mother of some while other records state that Deorah Smitson, was the mother of all of them.

Samuel Edgerley, also spelled Edgerly, was born in the year of 1700, to one Thomas Edgerley and Jane Whidden also spelled Whedon, in the town of Exeter in the county of Rockingham New Hampshire. There is some confusion on the day that Samuel died all the records I have see give the date of April 25, 1769, however this is the date his ( Will ) was probated, it is hardly unlikely they would have probated his will on the day of is death. Samuel made out his will in 1768, a year before his death. Abigail death would come in the year of 1790, at Barnstead, Belknap, New Hampshire.
There also seem to be some confusion on Samuel’s father name, some records have it as Thomas Edgerley, Thomas Edgerly, Thomas Edgerly Jr., Thomas Edgerley Emigrant. And there is some confusion on the year on which Abigail Judkins was born in some records state the year of 1703, while others state 1704, and still other state 1707. However all the records are in agreement on the date of the marriage and the names and dates of the children.

We the subscribers Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Northerly part of the Parish of Brintwood in the Province aforesaid Do Humbly Crave Leave of your Excellency and honours to Lay this our Humble Remonstrance of our Distressed Circumstances before your Excellency and honours as follows Viz :
Many of us Living four or five miles Distant from Exeter Meeting house have Attended the Publick Worship of God at that house for many years past with Great difficulty and our families Encreasing made it much more Difficult Especially in the Winter Spring & Fall of the year.
Wherefore about eight years ago we with several of the Southerly part of said Parish Erected a house for the Publick worship of God in the most suitable place as they thought, and we Now do think to carry on the Publick Worship in and accordingly at our own Charge have carry'd on the same in the winter, Spring and fall of the year ever since as we had for four years or thereabouts before Erecting said house carry'd on the Publick Worship in a Private house Standing near our Present Meeting house and about Last February was twelve month the Freeholders & Inhabitants of the Southerly part of Brintwood aforesaid Petitioned the Town of Exeter aforesaid to be set off as a Parish Contrary' to the will and Desire of most of us, and said Town of Exeter Granted their said Petition Not withstanding many of us Dissented there from . Rejected or Suspended Pensions-1832,1836, 1838.
When researching our ancestors it seems to be important to know what he did and what he got, but it's just as importation to know what he didn’t get and why he didn’t get it. There were thousands of men and women who received a pension and there were thousands that didn’t received one. I now have a index that tells why there was no pension.
I will list only ten names from each state stated in this index as there are thousands of names, way to many to put here. If you didn’t find your ancestor here and you would like to know if they are in the index, write to me, with his name and state. Rejected or Suspended Applications For Pension.
The following Men and women applied for a ( Revolutionary ) pension. The years of their applications were under the acts of 1832, 1836 and 1838, all were rejected or suspended because of the laws passed in that year. There was a resolution from Congress that passed on September 16, 1850, that askied for a accounting of all applications for a pension for the years stated above, this accounting was printed in 1852.

9. Mary Wingate, by Simon Chase guardian, Rochester, Strafford, In 1820, Wingate stated he had no family. Now there are two applicants. One named Mary, who is insane, and is represented by Simon Chase, of Rochester, guardian; While J. D. Chase applied as agent for Sarah Wingate, and widow of the same soldier.

Rejected or Suspended Applications For Pension.
The following Men and women applied for a ( Revolutionary ) pension. The years of their applications were under the acts of 1832, 1836 and 1838, all were rejected or suspended because of the laws passed in that year. There was a resolution from Congress that passed on September 16, 1850, that askied for a accounting of all applications for a pension for the years stated above, this accounting was printed in 1852.

Eliphlet Downer, Rank and regiment, Surgeon, Dolphin Cutter, Captain Nicholson, Disability, The strength and motions of his left arm impaired, in consequence of a wound by a grape shot., when and where, Sept. 1777, on board the Brig, Lexington, in an action with the Alert cutter, in the English Channel. Residence, Roxbury, To what pension entitled, one-third, Remarks: Enlisted on board the Dolphin in April, 1777, but the rolls does not show how long he served. He is entered on the Lexington roll as a passenger only. (4)., 4., Evidence complete, excepting that no proof that he was wounded at all, in any other character than that of passenger. No cause is shown why application was not made prior to December 11, 1788. It appears from the deposition of Nathan Dorsey, surgeon of the Continental armed brig Lexington, that Eliphlet Downer was a volunteer on board that vessel when he received the wound; hence, it would seem that, whatever pension shall be allowed him, it can apply only to the capacity in which he was then serving, and not to his profession as a surgeon.

No cause is shown why application was not made prior to December 11, 1788. It appears from the deposition of Nathan Dorsey, surgeon of the Continental armed brig Lexington, that Eliphlet Downer was a volunteer on board that vessel when he received the wound; hence, it would seem that, whatever pension shall be allowed him, it can apply only to the capacity in which he was then serving, and not to his profession as a surgeon.

Nathan Stoddard or Stoodard.
The other day I help a gentleman with some information on a Nathan Stooddard or Stoddard, and in return he give me some information on him. Not being of the family, but a surname researcher I found the information interesting and knew the information would be a big help to those looking into his life.

Nathan Stoddard, son of Gideon and Olive, born Aug. 8th 1742, lived in Woodbury, married Eunice Sanford about 1767. They had seven children Nathan joined the First church Woodbury, Sept, 1st 1771, and the same day his three children then living were baptized, but his wife Eunice did not join until Dec. 6th 1772.
In 1775 the air was full of rumours of war, the martial spirit of his father was inherited by the son, and as if preparing for the coming frav, Nathan, who had undoubtedly served ere now in the ranks, was in April of this year commissioned Ensign of the first Company or trainband of Woodbury which was known as the 13th Regiment of the Colony. What service, if any, he saw in this capacity does not appear, but hostilities soon afterwards breaking out, a few months later he entered the army as a private in the 4th Regiment which was ordered by General Washington to join the troops opposed to the British near Lake Champlain and to garrison Fort Ticonderoga.
In a skirmish with the enemy he was taken prisoner and carried to Quebec. Before he was ordered to jail he was concealed through the kindness of a French landlady, and was fed by her for a considerable time, and aided to escape, which it is said he did by swimming the St. Lawrence. He finally returned to Woodbury and there in the adjacent towns raised another Company of which he became Captain and was in all the engagements near Danbury, Conn, and Horse Neck, N. Y., in April and May 1777.
After the success of the northern Army under Gates and the surrender of Burgoyne in October, Captain Stoddard prepared to join the army of Washington on the Delaware. Early in November Captain Nathan Stoddard and Lieutenant John Strong, who had been sent to Woodbury on Military service, sent forward blankets and military stores to the amount of J£46. 13s. 5d. and then joined their command, which was stationed opposite Fort Mifflin on Mud Island.
Here they were opposed to Lord Howe who proposed to force the passage of the Delaware which was commanded by Fort Mercer at Red Bank on the Jersey side, and Fort Mifflin on Mud Island. After the disastrous dedefeat of their attack on Redbank the British proceeded with more deliberation to the reduction of Mud Island. By the 10th they had completed their batteries within 500 yards of the American fort and began an incessant fire from heavy artillery.
Lieut-Colonel Samuel Smith of Maryland, who was in command, was wounded next day and went to the main land, und on the 13th the brave garrison of 286 men and 20 artillerists was confided to Major Simeon Thayer of Rhode Island, who now volunteered to take the desperate command. On the 15th surrounded by 6 large British ships of war and a large Indiaman armed with 24 pounders with the land batteries, now five in number, playing from thirty pieces at short distances, the ramparts and block-houses on Mud Island were honeycombed and their cannon silenced.
In this desperate attack Captain Stoddard was instantly killed by a cannon shot which severed his head from his body as he was sighting a piece to fire on the enemy. In the evening the garrison evacuated, and when the British entered the fort they found nearly every cannon stained with blood. Captain Stoddard left one son, Nathan Ashbel, aged 9 years and six young daughters. He died intestate and his death is recorded in the Register of Woodbury. He was aged 35 years.
