Thomas M. Golding, was a few days ago found washed ashore opposite Fort Clark, and he was buried in a little sand-hill back of our quarters. The members of his Company (F) have taken great pains to fence in and decorate his grave, with such materials as Nature has at hand, in a very beautiful and artistic manner a touching tribute to his memory, as well as evidence that his comrades feel his loss and knew his worth as a man. I knew Golding well. He was one of the twenty -four " of Ours " at the Rip Raps, where I learned to respect him and became acquainted with some points in his history. A carpenter as well as an engineer by trade, he had once been in the employ of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad Company, and for a time had run an engine on that road. If my memory serves me, he had known Squire Hoisington in Chicago. He was one of the best of men, strictly temperate, and moral in all his ways. Never noisy or offensive, but an earnest soldier as well as man. And here he is buried on Hatteras Bank. In the world, of course, but still it does seem a strange fate to be buried here.

FORTY-FIFTH, PENNSYLVANIA VETERAN INFANTRY.

Samuel Haynes was born at Oxford, Chenango County, N. Y., June 30th, 1834. He received his education from the common schools of that county. In early manhood he was sent to the pine woods of northern Michigan for his health and was engaged in the lumber business with an uncle until his health was restored.

Three years later he was engaged in the same business in Lycoming County, Pa., and was in that business when the Civil War called for volunteers to put down the Rebellion. He was pilot on the Susquehanna River taking several rafts of lumber to market at Marietta, Pa., and when passing Harrisburg heard the tumult occasioned by the arrival and disposal of recruits. As soon as he could dispose of his lumber at Marietta, he returned to Harrisburg and enlisted as a private in the Tenth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (three months).

He then came to Wellsboro and helped to raise and drill Company I, of  the Fbrty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Mustered into service October 21st, 1861, he was orderly sergeant of that company until the Battle of James Island, S. C, June 10th, when he was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant of Company G and served in that capacity until April, 1864, at which time he became acting quartermaster for the regiment and filled that place until the expiration of his term of service, October 21st, 1864.

After the close of the war he again entered the lumber business for a short time but later became employed on the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad, now a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system, from Buffalo to Pittsburg, and from Buffalo to Olean and Oil City. He served 31 years on that road, the last 20 as supervisor of a division. He died October 13th, 1898, in Oil City, Pa., honored by all who knew him and beloved by those who were dear to him.

In the regimental history his name was spelled Saylors but in the State records it's spelled Sailor.

Henry Saylors or Sailor, age 40, Regement 46th., Indiana Infantry, Company K., Enlisted November 10, 1861, at Rochester, Indiana.  Nativity of Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.  Occupation Farmer.  Drowned in the Mississippi river, August 8, 1862, by the sinking of the steamer Acacia.

The following is from the 46th., regimental history.

About the 20th a steamer ( Acacia ), coming down the Mississippi river,struck a bar and was wrecked. It had on board some 200 soldiers returning to their regiments. Very nearly all were drowned. Henry Saylors or Sailor, of Company K, was among the lost. Some two weeks afterviard, Saylors or Sailor body was found in the river, near the camp of the Forty-sixth. It had floated forty miles and stopped near his company's quarters.

While researching some Illinois regiment I ran across this little story.  I found it interesting and a little sad.

At the battle of Fort Donelson a soldier of Co. K found in the knapsack of a Southern soldier, who had been killed in battle, the picture of a beautiful young lady. He carefully preserved it. At the battle of Shiloh, this soldier was killed. On examining his knapsack, to make the proper inventory of his goods, the Orderly of his company found this picture. He remembered the circumstance of its being found. He carefully preserved it. It was a great favorite with the boys in the company, and received the name of " The Daughter of Co. K." When the Regiment was on the march from Corinth to Athens, in November, 1863, it passed through the town of Pulaski, Tenn. As Lieut. Oats, of Co. K, was riding along the streets of Pulaski, he saw a young lady standing at the door of one of the residences of the town, whom he at once recognized as the original of the picture in posBession of Co. K. Speaking of the matter to others in the company, they all agreed that this was the original. The Lieutenant learned afterwards, to a certainty, that it was the same. The picture still remained in his possession, until near the last of January, 1864. At the time Gen. Roddy's forces made a dash upon our camp, when the Regiment was nearly all out, the officers, as well as men, lost everything that was in their tents. Among other things, the picture of "The Daughter of Co. K," was taken. Its loss is much regretted by the boys.

Service Record.

George Benton, Private, Age 23, Enlisted Co. B., August 12, 1862, for 3 years.  Lost September 19, 1863, in the battle of Chickamauga Georgia.

Authors note.  Although there is a head stone at Litchfield Park, he is not in the grave?, There are no records that he was Killed in battle only that he was lost.  Some researcher say he mustered out on September 19 or 20, 1863, at Chickamauga.  This is in error, any time any one is killed in battle or dies from wounds of a battle the date of his death is the date of his being mustered out.  You will read below how his Captain looked for years to find any records that he was killed and found nothing. So is he in the grave or not?

The following is told by his Captain.

There was one member of our company, George Benton, that by his kindness of heart, and implicit and cheerful obedience to orders, had won the respect and confidence of his officers and the hearts of his fellow soldiers. In speecH, modest and kindly, yet in the battle he had shown himself as brave as the bravest. George came to me loaded down with canteens, and asked permission to go to the rear and try to find water. I, with some emphasis, refused. The men at that set up a clamor, and insisted that they were suffering for want of water. I explained the hazardous nature of the enterprise. I assured them from the firing that our right was well turned, and that anyone going back, alone and unattended, was liable to be killed, wounded, or captured, which all dreaded more than death or wounds by reason of the inhuman treatment our soldiers received while in rebel prisons.

I said to George, "I am afraid you will never come back." With a smile of determination lighting up that noble young face, he replied, "I will come back, captain, or I will be a dead Benton." I was not quite strong enough for the emergency. I made a mistake. That mistake cost George Benton his life. He never returned. Whether he fell by a stray bullet, in those deep woods and thickets, or whether he was captured and murdered in prison, I know not. The records of Salisbury and Andersonville were searched, after the war, but on none could the name of George Benton be found. After we had fallen back on Chattanooga a letters came from his. father and sisters, inquiring concerning the fate of son and brother. No one can know with what bitterness I reproached myself for allowing myself to be pursuaded against my better judgment; and learning by that sad lesson no member of company B was ever again reported "missing in action."

I saw the father and sisters when we came back from the war, and told them what I had already written them before of the way George was lost; but "hope, like an anchor to the soul, sure and steadfast," would not suffer them to give up their dear boy as lost. They hoped that some day, like a lost mariner, he would come from perphaps captivity and sickness, to gladden their hearts and relieve the suspense that was crushing their lives. But twenty-seven autumns have returned since that brave boy was lost to sight in the smoke that covered that dread field of Chickamauga, but no tidings ever came of that one, who was gladly willing to risk his life to alleviate the sufferings of his comrades, and was permitted to do so by the weakness of his commanding officer.

HEADQUARTERS Co. F, 21sT O. V. I.
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 8, 1864.
SIR : I have the honor to submit the following list of casualties, together with a report of the engagements in which Company F, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry participtated, during the campaign which commenced May 7, 1864, and ended September 2. 1864.  On the 7th day of May, the company left Ringgold, Georgia, numbering two commissioned officers, and fifty-eight enlisted men present.

May 9th, while the regiment was moving to position in close proximity to Rocky Face, private James M. Latham was seriously wounded with a fragment of a shell, and 2d Lieutenant Mark Wood, was injured by a fall, which incapacitated him for further active service during the remainder of the campaign.

During the engagement before Resaca, Ga., May 14, the regiment was held in reserve, in consequence of which Co. F sustained a loss of but one slightly wounded, private Napoleon B. Platner, who returned to duty in a few days. During the engagements of May 27th and 28th, and up to the time Dallas was evacuated, the company sustained no loss, although subjected to heavy fire of musketry at different times. June 15th brought us up again in close contact with the enemy. Though brought under a murderous fire of artillery, and subjected to frequent skirmishes, yet strange to say the company suffered no loss whatever, during the siege at Kennesaw Mountain.

July 6th found us pressing the enemy s rear, near the banks of the Chattahoochee river. Nothing unusual occured until the 9th, when the regiment was ordered to report at the skirmish line, at 6 o clock a. m. Upon arriving at the designated place, orders were received to advance the skirmish line, and feel of the enemy s position. In accomplishing this, privates Thomas Foreman and James Dorsey were killed, and Mahlou Povuemire severely wounded.

In justice to the non-commissioned officers and enlisted men ot Co. F, I must here say, that they conducted themselves on this occasion like true soldiers. From that time until July 20th, the company participated in no actions or skirmishes. When Hood assaulted the 20th corps and a part of the 14th, on the 20th, the company was on the skirmish line, and held its position under a severe fire of musketry and canister.

While in front of Atlanta, August 11, 1864, the company was detailed for duty on the skirmish line. During the day the line was advanced, and during the action that ensued private Abraham Powell, and on the 12th, Corporal Samuel Powell, and private Uriah Grable were wounded ; the latter dangerously with a piece of shell. No other action or casualities occurred till September 1, 1864, near Jonesboro. In the charge made by the regiment in the afternoon privates James E. Scott and John T. Reed were wounded, and Jacob  Liter missing, supposed to be taken prisoner. At this time the company numbered one officer and forty-six men.

Corporal John A. Hartshorn, of Company G, lost his life incountering three rebels in the thick brush, he shot one, bayonetted another, and was himself shot dead by the third, the whole tragedy being enacted in but a few seconds. The only eyewitness, so far as the writer has information, was Colonel Cowdin, of the First Massachusets, although there may have been others. The next day the three brave men were found lying together, as they fell. This was Hartshorn's first, as well as last, battle, he having been detained in hospital, against his vigorous protests, when the regiment marched to Bull Run.

Son of Richard and Elmina Bowen Herendeen was born at Newport, Herkimer County, N. Y., December 21, 1837; educated in Common and Academic schools, studied' law at Joliet, 111-, and at the Albany (N. Y.) University, was admitted to the Bar in i860 and in May, 1861 entered Civil War service as a private of Co. B, 10 N. Y. M. doing Guard duty at the Albany Barracks; August 16, 1S61, enlisted as a private in the 44th N. Y. V. I., and in 1862 was promoted to Sergeant Major, 2d Lieut., ist Lieut., and Adjutant; served in the field until January 21, 1864, when detached for service in the Department of the East; Post Adjt. Elmira, N. Y., Post Q. M. Auburn, N. Y., and Judge Adv. of Gen'l Court Martial, Elmira, N. Y., until October 11, 1864, on the expiration of the regiment's term of service, when he was honorably mustered out at Albany, N. Y. Conduct commended in Commander's reports of battles of Hanover . Court House and Malvern Hill, Va.

Commenced the practice of law at Hannibal, Mo., in 1865; was married to Miss Mary E. Royce in 1878, later engaged in various manvifacturing and mercantile pursuits, and now resides at Wilmette, Cook Co., 111. Comrade of Geo. H. homas, Post No. j G. A. R. (Chicago), member of the Western Soc. Army of the Potomac and Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Illinois Commandery.

Names Of Civil War Steamers.

There are a lot of people looking for their ancestors boats that may have been in the civil war.  Their ancestor may have been a owner of one or may have been a captain or just a member of the crew.

There were hundreds if not thousands of steamers on the rivers of America at the time of the civil war.  Many of these ships names were lost to history and some ships names were changed.  I tried to pick names that were not so famous.  I was looking for the lesser known names.  Although I know some of this names are of battle ships, but mostly they are of Hospital ships, Mail Carriers and Troop Transporters.

Some families may already know the name of their ancestors ship but don't know what it was doing in the civil war now is your chance to find out.  There are some reports on these ships however these reports are mostly of troop moverments.  You may request a look up and I will see what I can find.

William Channing Moore, Michigan.

This little short is told by General J. H. Kidd, in his book about Custer with the Michigan Cavalry.

William Channing Moore, a member of the Freshman class, came hurriedly into the room and, aglow with excitement, threw down his books, and extending his hand, said: "Good-by, old boy; there is a vacant position in the Adrian company. I have accepted it and am off for the war. I leave on the first train for Detroit and shall join the company tomorrow morning."

"What is the position?" I asked.

"High private in the rear rank," he laughingly replied.

Moore was in the Bull Run battle, where he was shot through the arm and taken prisoner. He was exchanged and discharged and came back to his class in 1862. His sense of duty was not satisfied, however,for he enlisted again in the Eighteenth Michigan infantry, in which regiment he rose to be a captain. He survived the war and returned to civil life, only to be drowned several years later while fording a river in the South.

"Billy" Moore, as he was affectionately called, was a young man of superb physique, an athlete, a fine student, and as innocent of guile as a child. He is mentioned here as a typical student volunteer, one of many, as the record of the Michigan University in the war amply proves.
