Parents: Thomas Jefferson Turley (1807 - 1854), Flora Crudup Battle Turley (1819 - 1892).
Wife; Irene Rayner Turley (1849 - 1939).

US Senator. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Thomas Jefferson and Flora Crudup Battle Turley. After attending public schools, Thomas in 1861 enlisted and served in the Maynard Rifles of Memphis, a Confederate company that joined the 154th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Turley sustained wounds at the battles of Shiloh (1862) and Atlanta (1864) before being captured in the Battle of Nashville in 1864. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, from December 1864 until March 1865.
Upon the war's conclusion, he attended the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia, completing his studies in 1867. In 1870 he was admitted to the Tennessee bar and began practicing in Memphis with L. D. McKissick, a former Confederate colonel. When former Governor Isham G. Harris teamed with them in 1876, the firm became Harris, McKissick & Turley. A prominent attorney, upon the death in office of Senator Harris in 1897, Turley was appointed by the governor of Tennessee to the vacancy.
He was subsequently elected to the balance of the term by the Tennessee General Assembly. Turley declined to stand for any further service in the Senate once the balance of the term to which Harris had initially been elected had expired, serving in the Senate from July 20, 1897 to March 4, 1901. He returned to his Memphis law practice until shortly before his death in 1910. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, the final resting place of many West Tennessee political figures.

In the battle of Franklin none occupied a more
exposed position than the Nineteenth, and none more fully accomplished all that
could be asked of flesh and blood. Its right rested on the west side of the Co-
lumbia turnpike. Charging across the plain, the enemy were driven from their
breastworks. Several men of the regiment clambered over them in the face of
the enemy concentrated behind the buildings a few yards distant. Finding them-
selves between two tires, they sought such protection as was afforded. Sergeant
Lum. Waller, of Co. E, than whom no truer man lives, was wounded at the end
of Carter's brick smoke-house by the fire of our own men the enemy firing from
the opposite end and lay there all night. This building still stands, bearing
the marks of over one hundred bullets. Here fell our beloved brigade commander, Gen. Strahl. He died upon the enemy's works about midway of the Nineteenth Regiment. During the engagement he took gun after gun from the men
below and fired at the enemy. A private of Co. A, Zack Smith by name, whom
Gen. Strahl had punished for some act of insubordination, seeing the General on the works and firing at the Federals, scrambled up to his side, and as the General
fired he fired. The General, struck with admiration, patted Zack on the shoulder and said: "Go it, Zack; 1 will never forget you for this"Wednesday, June 03, 2015

He gained the reputation of a fighting officer, engaging in all the battles at Belmont, Shiloh, Richmond, Perryville, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Promoted Brigadier General in November 1863, his brigade took part in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign. At the Battle of Vining Station, July 4, 1864, his leg was taken off by an exploding shell and he was permanently disabled for military duty. After the war he engaged in farming and was elected clerk of the criminal court, Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1878.

Elias Warner, aged 87 years, a retired farmer of near Pleasant Hill, died on Saturday night at Montevue Hospital where he had been a boarding patient for some months. For six years he had been at the Fahrney Memorial Home, Washington county. He was a veteran of the Civil war, a member of Third New York Cavalry. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George S. Martz, Pleasant Hill, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at home of his daughter. Interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Thomas P. Rice, funeral director.

On the morning of June 18th, the Eebels having withdrawn, a party of three or four men advanced to reconnoiter, and picking up a couple of stragglers they were sent back in charge of Peter Cupp, a private of company H, who, in returning to the regiment, suddenly came upon a Eebel outpost which had been left by accident. Cupp announced the withdrawal to them and ordered them to stack their arms and surrender, which they did, and one captain, one lieutenant and sixteen men of the First Georgia Volunteers, were marched into our lines bv private Cupp. While in the vicinity the regiment was engaged in scouting and skirmishing, frequently capturing prisoners.

On October 4, 1862, Barney mustered in as a Private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Vermont infantry. He was discharged due to disability from typhoid fever in November 1862.
In July, 1863, Barney mustered in again, serving as a member of Company L of the 11th Vermont Infantry. He transferred to Company C before mustering out August 15, 1865.

On October 4, 1862, Barney mustered in as a Private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Vermont infantry. He was discharged due to disability from typhoid fever in November 1862.
In July, 1863, Barney mustered in again, serving as a member of Company L of the 11th Vermont Infantry. He transferred to Company C before mustering out August 15, 1865.

In May 1862, Lockman was ordered to join Major General Thomas Hindman, commander of the Trans-Mississippi District. By August 1862, Lockman had been promoted to major and was serving as Hindman’s assistant chief of ordinance. He served as chief of ordnance of Hindman’s First Corps from September 1862 to January 1863.
He was paroled in 1865 and was shot in Galveston, Texas, on January 11, 1869. Lockman died the following day. His murderer, Leroy Cotton, was tried, convicted and sentenced to death, but he committed suicide on the morning of his execution in April 1870.

Captain Zimri Barber Bates

Burial: Riverview Cemetery, Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas.
Zimri Barber Bates, a native of New York and a farmer in Sangamon County, Illinois in 1860, listed his residence as Elkhart, Logan County, Illinois when he joined Company G, 10th Illinois Cavalry in November 1861. Commissioned a first lieutenant, Bates was promoted to captain of the company in 1862. The regiment saw extensive service in the Trans-Mississippi Theater, including the skirmish at Cotton Plant, Arkansas in July 1862, the capture of Arkansas Post in January 1863, and the capture of Little Rock in September 1863. In January 1865, the veterans and recruits of the regiment were consolidated with the soldiers of the 15th Illinois Cavalry and designated the 10th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Cavalry. Bates died in Blackwell, Oklahoma, in February 1917.
