Edward H. Twining was promoted from private to Captain of Company K in September, 1862, and served until October, 1864, when he resigned to accept commission as Captain A. D. C. on the Staff of Major General J. J. Reynolds. While in the ranks, Twining was noted for his soldierly bearing and strict observance of all duties and formalities required of a soldier. He was a man of superior education, having graduated at Wabash College in 1852, and was afterward a professor in the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale.

In 1866 he was appointed to a professorship in Washington and Jefferson College, Pa., and later was connected with the Universities of Minnesota and Missouri. In 1882 he entered the service of the Government as Engineer under the Mississippi River Commission, which position he still holds. It goes with out saying that Capt. Twining reflected great honor on our regiment, both during and since the war. His ad dress is 2739 Locust street, St. Louis, Mo.

Benjamin Thomas Cushing was born in Conneaut, Ohio, September 10. 1839, was educated at Kingsvllle Academy; enlisted in Company G, was appointed sergeant, and was In continuous service as such until Septembers, 1863. when he was wounded in the ankle, during the famous charge of the regiment at Chlckamauga. He remained on the field until the following Saturday, his wound being dressed on Friday for the first time. He was in hospital until June 28. 1864. when he was discharged. He was admitted to the bar and elected Probate Judge of Ashtabula County, in 1868: re-elected in IMP. but resigned before the expiration of his term because of ill health and died of consumption November 4, 1872. at Chat field. Minn. He was a most exemplary man and faithful soldier.

Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. When Virginia seceded from the Union, he was a Virginia State Legislator attorney and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 27th Virginia. He led his regiment in the First Battle of Bull Run and was in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. In April 1862, he was commissioned a Brigadier General commander of the Army of Southwest Virginia. In June 1863, he served on the court of inquiry to examine the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi and led his brigade in the battle at Cold Harbor, November 1863. He took command of the Department of Western Virginia in 1864 and served until he surrendered his corps in Augusta, Georgia at the war‘s end. After the war, he opened a legal practice and was involved in banking and railroads.

CASE—Private Joshua F. Lock, Co. E, 15th Iowa Volunteers, aged 21 years, was wounded near Atlanta, Georgia, August llth, 1864, by a couoidal musket ball, which caused a perforating fracture of the base of the cranium. On the same day he was admitted to the hospital of the 4th division, Seventeenth Corps; on the 14th, was sent to the Seventeenth Corps hospital, and on September 20th, 1864, was furloughed. On November 22d, he was admitted to the hospital at Keokuk, Iowa. Simple dressings only were applied to the wound. He was discharged the service August 25th, 1865, and pensioned. On August 28th, 1865, Pension Examiner H. F. Cleaver states that there was partial hemiplegia of the right side, and rates the disability total.

Medical and Surgical History.

CASE—Private Edward Ware, Co. F, 13th Iowa Volunteers, aged 24 years, was wounded near Atlanta, Georgia, July 20th, 1864, by a conoidal musket ball, which fractured both tables of the frontal bone at the upper border, left side, and penetrated the brain. He was admitted to the hospital of the 4th division, Seventeenth Corps, on July 30th; on August 3d, was transferred to the hospital of the Seventeenth Corps, and on August 10th, was sent north. No records of the case can be found, until December 19th, when Ware was admitted to the hospital at Keoltuk, Iowa, from furlough. The ball had been removed by incision on November 6th, 1864, and simple dressings had been applied. The wound was still open, but looked healthy. On January 2d, 1865, Ware was transferred to Davenport, Iowa, for muster out, and discharged June 2d, 1865, and pensioned. Subsequent information states that this man is a confirmed epileptic.

UPDYKE, J. R., Private, Co. B, 5th New York Cavalry. Sabre-cut of the scalp, and gunshot wound of the hip. Hanover, Pennsylvania, June 30th, 1863. Admitted to Fort Schuyler Hospital, New York Harbor, July 15th. Returned to duty  August 28th, 1863.

Elijah Mosely Dodson

Maj Elijah Mosely Dodson.

Birth: Feb. 20, 1835, DeKalb County, Georgia.
Death: Apr. 21, 1904, Chattanooga, Hamilton County,

Tennessee. Confederate veteran. Son of Samuel and Rebecca Gardner Dodson. In battles at Snodgrass Hill (Chickamauga) and Missionary Ridge. "Shot through the head just below the brain at Missionary Ridge." Wounded (again) and permanently disabled at Kennesaw Mountain on July 19, 1864. After the war, he practiced law in Ringgold, Georgia, and served in the Georgia Legislature. Married Frances Garmany in June, 1866. In 1871, moved his law practice to Chattanooga, and was one of the founders of the Central Baptist Church. Helped develop Sherman Heights in East Chattanooga, and Dodson Avenue was named for him.

Burial: Forest Hills Cemetery, hattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee.

Wounded through shoulder at Resaca, Ga. in 1864. Surrendered at Greensboro, N. C. Apr. 26, 1865. (Born in Twiggs County, Ga. May 1844. Died in Bibb County, Ga. in 1929.)

GEORGE BROWN,
Son of Abner and Emeline Brown, was born in Madison N. Il.,  June 7th, 1837 ; enlisted May 3d, 1861, and was mustered into the U. S. Service July 16th, 1861, as private in Company I,  13th Regiment Mass. Volunteers, to serve three years He Was wounded in the skirmish at Harper’s Ferry, September 2d, 1861.

He was under fire at Cedar Mountain Va., August 9th, and Rappahannoek Station on the 22d, and in the battles of Thoroughfare Gap, August 28th, second Bull Run on the 29th and 30th, Chantilly September 1st, Antietam, Md, September 17th, Fredericksburg Va., December 13th, 1862; Deep Run April 30th, 1863; Chancellorsville May 3d, 4th and 15th; Gettysburg Pa., July 1st, 2d and 3d; Mine Run November 27th, 1863.

He re-enlisted January 2d, and was mustered in January 4th,1864, to serve three years. He was in the battles of the Wilderness Va., May 5th, 6th and 7th,1864. Laurel Hill and North side of Spotsylvzrnia from the 8th to the 14th of May; near Spotsylvania Court House, East side, from the 14th to the 20th. North Anna River, near Jericho Ford,
May 23d ; Bethesda Church, May 30th, 31st and June 1st; Coal Harbor, June 3d ; in front of Petersburg, June 17th ; and on the 18th he was again wounded. He was transferred to Company  B, 39th Regiment July 16th, 1864, and was discharged at  Alexandria, Va., for disability, June 13th,1865.
