Petition dated Boston, April 29, 1777, signed by James Mugford, of Marblehead, asking that said Stevens be commissioned as commander of the brigantine "Velona" (privateer), designed to join the fieet at Boston under Commodore John Manly; ordered in Council April 29,1777, that a commission be issued; also, petition dated Boston, Nov. 2, 1777, signed by Margaret Ladd, stating that the sloop on which she and her husband had taken passage from Cork to Jamaica had been captured by a privateer from Marblehead, of which said Stevens was Captain, and the passengers made prisoners; that her husband had been separated from her and sent to some port in France, and begging leave to be sent in the cartel bound to New York whence she could return to her friends; ordered in Council Nov. 3,1777, that the petition be granted.
