The Last Five Remaining Revolutionary War Soldiers

There had been thousands of men that had serviced in the revolutionary War and by 1865, there were only five remaining, according to the United States Treasury Deportment, who had only five names left on the pension rolls. The United States Congress of 1865, decided to honor these men by given them a extra, three hundred dollars a year for the rest of their lives, plus the pension they were now receiving I will honor their names by placing their names here.

1. Lemuel Cook, enlisted at Hatfield, Massachusetts, is now about ninety-eight years of age, and resides in Clarendon, Orleans County, New York.

2. Samuel Downing, enlisted in Carroll County, New Hampshire, is now about ninety-eight years of age, and lives in Edinburg, Saratoga County, New York.

Note, in 1867, Samuel Downing had another Bill in Congress.

CHAP. LL — An Act granting an additional Pension to Samuel Downing, one of the last
surviving Soldiers of the Revolutionary War.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Intenor be, and he is hereby, directed to place upon the pension roll the name of Samuel Downing, one of the last surviving soldiers of the revolutionary war, for au additional pension, at the rate of five hundred dollars per annum, from the third day of September, anno Domini eighteen hundred and sixty-six, and to continue during the remainder of his life.

3. William Hutchings, enlisted at Newcastle, Maine, (then Massachusetts, ) is now one hundred years old, and resides in Penobscot, Hancock County, Maine.

4. Alexander Maroney, enlisted at Lake George, New York, as a drummer-boy, is now about ninety-four years old, his residence is Yates, Orleans County, New York.

5. James Barham, substitute for a drafted man in South Hampton County, Virginia, lives in the State of Missouri, and is in his one hundred and first year.

In 1864, Joseph H. Barrett, the Commissioner of Pensions, was asked to give a covering of the names of all revolutionary pensioners now on the pension rolls of the United States; which was ordered to be entered at length on the journal of the House, as follows.

Note of the twelve names listed only five remained living.

1. James Barham, on the St. Louis, Missouri, roll, at $32 33 per annum; born in Southampton county, Virginia, May 18, 1764; age, 99 years 9 months.

2. John Goodnow, on the Boston, Massachusetts, roll, at $36 67 per annum; born in Sudbury, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, January 30, 1762; age, 102 years 1 ½ month.

3. Amaziah Goodwin, on Portland, Maine, roll, at $38 33; born in Somersworth, Strafford county, New Hampshire, February 15, 1759; age, 105 years.

4. William Hutchings, on Portland, Maine, roll, at $21 66; born in York, York county, Maine, (then Massachusetts,) in the year 1764.

5. Adam Link, on Cleveland, Ohio, roll, at $30 per annum; born in Washington county, Pennsylvania; age, 102 years.

6. Benjamin Miller, on the Albany, New York, roll, at $24 54 per annum; born in Springfield, Massachusetts, April 4, 1764; age, 99 years 10½ months.

7. Alexander Maroney, on the Albany, New York, roll, at $8 per month; born in the year l770, enlisted at Lake George, New York; age, 94 years; enlisted by his father, as he was young.

8. John Pettingill, on the Albany, New York, roll, at $50 per annum; born in Windham, Connecticut, November 30, 1766; age, 97 years 2½ months.

9. Daniel Waldo, on the Albany, New York, roll, at $96 per annum; born in Windham, Connecticut, September 10, 1762; age, 101 years 5¼ months.

10. Samuel Downing, (papers do not show his age,) on the Albany, New York, roll, at $80 per annum; served in the 2d New Hampshire regiment.

11. Lemuel Cook, on Albany, New York, roll, at $100 per annum; no age or birthplace given in papers.

12. Jonas Gates, on the St. Johnsbury, Vermont, roll, at $8 per month; papers mislaid.
