Israel Hutchinson, representing that certain officers who belonged to his regiment in 1776, and other officers not of his regiment, were prisoners at Long Island, and recommending that advance wages for 1 mo. be sent to each officer; said Gilbard reported a Captain, but not of Col. Petition signed by Samuel Eliot, Jr., Agent for state of Con- necticut, stating that said Grospelius, a native of Sweden who had never been a subject of Great Britain, was taken prisoner in March, 1777, on the passage from Liverpool to Jamaica, and carried to Dartmouth by an armed vessel belonging to Connecticut; that on his arrival at Dartmouth he entered service as a marine on board the brig "Defence," and remained "on board ever since;" that he was taken into custody on the supposition that he was a prisoner of war and carried on board a prison-ship, and asking that he might be ordered to return to service on the " Defence," where he had engaged to serve for 1 year; ordered in Council Sept. 12, 1777, that the Commissary of Prisoners be directed to release said Gros- pelius and deliver him to Capt. Smedley, Commander of the brig " Defense."
