Royal Ordway, born in Vershire, Vt., enlisted from Middlesex. He was 30 years old, medium size, dark complexion and black hair. He was a carpenter by trade. He was an able-bodied man and a faithful soldier. For a time he acted as Company cook. His residence is Washington, Vt., where he has lived most of the time since the war.

Pages 279-80., It was a custom of the cooks late at night to visit the well just outside the stockade entrance and fill their camp kettles for the next morning's coffee. It chanced on a certain bright moonlight night the well-known and popular comrade George C. Beckford, who at that time was cook for an officers' mess, went out with his kettle at the weird hour of eleven p. m. Near the top of the slope up from the well were some scattered graves. Now just as this man had raised his filled kettle to the well flooring he chanced to glance toward the graves, and there he saw or thought he saw a ghost looking over one of the wooden headboards. As he had been a sailor, this was too much for him. He dropped his kettle, rushed back to the fort and to his quarters, threw himself upon his bunk, drew his blanket over his head and never again went outside the fort after dark. But there is another side to George C. Beckford.

In the Spring of 1862 he arrived in Liverpool after a three years' voyage. Pinning a small flag, the "Stars and Stripes," to his collar, he went ashore and made his way to one of the haunts of seafaring men. On entering he was greeted with a jeering reference to the colors he wore. His indignation was at once aroused, and, sailor-like, he was ready to resent the insult. "Hold on, shipmate," exclaimed the keeper, "I see you are not posted. The United States have all gone to pieces. They are fighting each other and the flag you carry is a thing of the past." He took the flag from his collar and sat down and cried. All at once an impulse seized him, and, holding the sacred emblem aloft in both his hands, meanwhile steadfastly gazing thereon, he apostrophized it: "Under your folds I was born. As a boy I grew to manhood beneath your protection. I have traveled the world over and have never for a moment had but one thought concerning you. If need be I will die for you !" He returned at once to his ship, settled his accounts and next day sailed for New York. During the esuing three eventful years he never faltered

Punishment In The Rhode Island Seventh Infantry.

Punishment was infrequent in the Seventh but occasionally it was necessary.  Bodily discomfort that did not infringe the laws of health was the chief penalty.  The precise from was various.  Confinement in the guardhouse was the most harmless and the most common.

The most brutal was tying a man up by his thumbs so he was obliged to stand tiptoe.  Sometime this punishment would be
terminated by a superior officer.

Another from of punishment was the knapsack drill, standing on a barrel in some conspicuous place, and the performance of camp drudgery.

One of the most aggravating forms of punishments was the digging of a specified number holes in the ground, the depth and breadth of a spade.  Each was to be filled before the next was commenced, and no rest was permitted except for a meal.

One punishment was mounting offenders astride a horizontal rail, supported twelve or fifteen feet from the ground by trees or post, this Punishment was known as "Riding Black Horse Cavalry."

But no matter what the punishment was a sentry was assigned in seeing the punishment was carried out.

CHARLES G. OTIS.

Colonel Charles G. Otis, formerly of Yonkers, died at his residence, 131 Pacific street, in Brooklyn, N. Y., on Monday, Aug. 7, 1893. He had been confined to the house since last December.

Colonel Otis was born 62 years ago, in Troy. When the war broke out. he organized a regiment of cavalry there and became its colonel, serving throughout the war. He was once captured and spent several months in Libby prison before being released by exchange. History mentions that he and his troops entered a small town down South, and he registered at the hotel as "the first Yank in town."

After the war, Colonel Otis joined his cousins, Charles R. and Norton P. Otis, in the manufacture of elevators, and was an agent of the Elevator Company at the time of his death. He had been in Canada during much of the last two years, attending to contracts for elevators, and several years previous he spent in Buenos Ayres.

His wife died about three years ago. Two sons and four daughters survive him. Two of the daughters are married, being the wives of Cecil R. Thomas of Brooklyn.

CASE 885. Sergeant Rufus G. Hay ward, Co. B, 4th Vermont, aged 19 years, was wounded at Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862, and was treated in field hospital until the 18th, when he was admitted to Mount Pleasant Hospital, and thence furloughed on May 12, 1863. On August 5th, he entered the Brattleboro Hospital. Surgeon E. E. Phelps, IT. S. V., reported a "gunshot wound; ball perforating abdomen, but not lodging, with lesion of intestines." This patient was discharged the
service October 30, 1863. Pension Examiner S. Newell, of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, reported, November 4, 1864;

" Gunshot wound, ball entering the left side, wounding the intestines and bladder; urinary fistula and artificial anus resulted. He is in failing health; will probably terminate fatally in a few months;" and on November 23, 1869, Examiner C. C. Calhoun reported:

" I attended Rufus G. Hayward occasionally after his discharge up to the time of his death, which occurred on August 10, 1869, so that I was familiar with his disease up to his death. He had two abscesses on his left side, which broke out and became running sores; and, by a breaking of the colon or large intestine, there was a constant discharge of faecal matter up to the time of his death, rendering him helpless; he had also three abscesses in his back constantly discharging; an entire loss of use of left arm and leg, so that he was wholly unable to dress and undress himself, all occasioned by gunshot wounds received in action."

CASE 259. Private Thomas M. Fuller, company C, 1st Michigan cavalry; age 44; admitted from Harper s Ferry,Virginia, April 6, 1865. Diarrhoea. [The register of the Island hospital, Harper s Ferry, Virginia, shows that this man was admitted to that hospital February 27th inflammation of the lungs and sent to Cumberland April 6th.] This was a very delicate man, of scrofulous diathesis. He stated that he had been sick for four weeks. April 13th : The diarrhoea still continues;the dejections are frequent; the tongue dry and red ; appetite poor; thirst; pulse feeble, frequent, and compressible. He complains to-day of dyspnoea, and of pain and soreness in the left side of the chest, which is dull on percussion. Died, May 11th..

Autopsy seven hours after death : Body extremely emaciated. The left pleural cavity was filled with pus. The left lung was collapsed and only a fourth of its normal size ; it formed a firm flesh-like mass adherent to the spine. An abscess had formed between the fourth and fifth ribs, commencing about two inches from the sternum and extending to its left border ; it appeared to be making an effort to point externally. The pericardium throughout its whole extent was adherent to the heart. The liver was very small, soft, and flabby. The spleen was pale, large, and very soft. The jejunum, ileum, and ascending colon were inflamed and presented patches of ulceration. Acting Assistant Surgeon S. B. West.

William C. Freshwater, private, Co. F, 66th Ohio Infantry, Enlisted Janurary17, 1862, for 3 years, age 22.  Rest unreadable.

CASE 504. Private William Freshwater, Co. F, 66th Ohio, received wounds of the abdomen, left forearm, and neck, at Port Republic, June 9, 1862. He was conveyed in an army wagon to Front Royal, arriving on the 13th, and on the 14th was sent by rail to Washington, and admitted, on the 15th, to Judiciary Square Hospital. He was placed in a ward under the charge of Acting Assistant Surgeon David W. Cheever, who states that a. ball had entered one and a half inches outside the left nipple, on a level with the seventh rib, and could be felt under the skin near the spinous process of the last dorsal vertebra. Some viscus, thought to be the lower tip of the lung, protruded at the wound. He died in two days (June 17th), with symptoms of peritonitis. Post mortem: The ball pierced the diaphragm without touching the lower lobe of the lung; there was no perforation of the intestines, but they were glued together by peritoneal inliammation. The pancreas protruded at the wound.

Wilbur F. Stevenson, Indiana.

Wilbur F. Stevenson.

Mr. Stevenson was born in Scott County, Kentucky, November 12, 1842. Parents, Evan Stevenson and Lydia Boggs Stevenson. The family moved to Benton County, Indiana, in 1856. He attended school at the "Battle Ground" in 1860  and 1861. He enlisted in Company D. Tenth Indiana Infantry, September 6, 1861 ; was made Corporal and later promoted to Sergeant. His service was marked by nothing of unusual interest until the battle of Chickamauga, where he "stopped a bullet with his knee." After partial recovery he did hospital duty at Madison, Ind., until the expiration of his term  of enlistment. He went to school in LaFayette in 1865.

Moved to Piatt County, Illinois, in 1868. Married Alice Tallman in 1871. Has five children  Evan Stevenson, born in 1872; Mrs. W. H. Dilatush, born in 1876; Mrs. C. B. Caldwell, born in 1883; Mrs. J. W. Ayre, born in 1884; Mrs. E. J. Hawbaker, born in 1889. He has served terms as Supervisor of Piatt County and as Mayor of Monticello, but has managed, so far, to "side step the penitentiary." In politics he was originally a Republican, but becoming disgusted at the mean treatment of the Southern people during the reconstruction period he "reformed" (Oh, Lord) and embraced Democracy. His principal business interests have been farming and the feeding of cattle and hogs.

The above was written by himself. It is a mystery how the "political reformation'' of this fellow kept him out of the pen. That of itself was a sufficient crime to cause a life sentence.

Colonel John A. Savage, Wisconsin.

Colonel John A. Savage was born at Ogdensburg, N. Y., in 1 832. Was the son of Rev. John A. Savage, D. D., president of Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, and who for more than twenty-three years was pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg, N. Y. He died December 13th, 1864.

Colonel Savage's studies were pursued at the Ogdensburg Academy and the Academy at Argyle,  Washington County, N. Y. (the home of his uncle. Dr. James Savage), and he was prepared to enter the sophomore class in Union College, which was his father's Alma ]Mater, when he moved with his father and family to Waukesha, his father taking the presidencv of Carroll College in 1850.

Colonel Savage began the study of law in the office of R. W. Wright, at Waukesha, but within the year he went to Milwaukee and entered the office of Judge H. N. Wells. Soon after he was admitted to the bar. Colonel Savage was a natural orator and had a remarkably clear voice. His love for and appreciation of genuine eloquence was very prominent. His brother, Rev. Edward Savage, of Windom, Minn., says of him: "I remember his enthusiasm. Taking me in hand when I was a boy at school, he wrote out for me to learn a declamation, the eloquent closing passage of the speech of Hon. Byron Payne on the defense of S. M. Booth on trial for violation of the fugitive slave law. John's instructions were not such as would lead me to the patent bombastic oratory that is so common a product of schools of oratory, but he charged me to read it carefully and get possessed of the impassional earnestness that prompted the various words. * * John had hard work to come down to the common-place court commissioners' office work when those masters in legal argument, such as V. G. Ryan, Jonathan E. Arnold and Byron Payne, were in court. He loved to listen to such speakers, and yielding to his passion for such treats, had much to do with his development as a public speaker."

On August 30th, 1802, John A. Savage was commissioned adjutant of the Twenty-eighth Wisconsin Infantry, mustered as such September 5th, 1802. Mr.Edward Savage, a younger brother, now a prominent minister of Windom, Minn., also was a member of the Twenty-eighth Wisconsin, Company B. Adjutant John A. Savage resigned for disability August 5th, 1863. Recovering his health, he was commissioned lieutenant-colonel of the Thirty-sixth Wisconsin Volunteers, February 9th, 1864, and mustered as such March 18th, 1864. He went with the regiment to the Army of the Potomac, participating with it in all of its battles - North Anna, Totopotomy, Bethesda Church and Cold Harbor.

When at the latter battle. Colonel Frank A. Haskell was killed, Lieutenant Colonel Savage became the regiment's commander. Was commissioned colonel June 11th, 1864. Seven days later at the charge over the "Melon Patch," while leading the regiment in front of the colors he shouted : '"Three cheers for the honor of Wisconsin ! Forward, my brave men !" Within two minutes he fell mortally
wounded. Was taken to Washington, where he died on July 4th; 1864.

The Bar Association of Milwaukee met and passed resolutions of tribute to Colonel Savage. He too, like Colonel Haskell, was out down in the prime of life when there was such a good future for so bright an intellect.

American Seamen Impressed.

When one hears of impressed seaman one thinks of Great Britain ( British ), this was true in many cases.  However many other countries were taking ships like France and Spain and others.  Many had treaties with the United States, but it was unable to in force them.

Many of these impressed seaman were from merchant ship.   The owners of this ship soon got tired of losing their ships and crews and of course money. They started to arm them under the protest of many nations even the United States because of the treaties. 

But the merchant won their right to arm themselves.  If they hadn't armed themselves they would have been like sitting ducks on an open pond.. Many had certificates of protection, but these protections were about as worthless as the paper they were written on.

A.J. Cole was born in Jackson county, this state, son of Horace Cole and wife, the former of whom had come to Michigan from Onondaga county, New York, at an early day in the settlement of Jackson neighborhood and had there established his home, becoming in his day a fairly prominent resident of that community, and there grew to manhood, learning the carpenter trade which he has followed all the active years of his life.

When the Civil War broke out A. J. Cole enlisted in Company K. Sixteenth regiment. Michigan volunteer Infantry, and served in that regiment until he was   wounded in battle in 1862. after which he was honorably discharged t )r disability. Returning home, he presently recovered from the effect of his wound and re-enlisted, in 1863, in the Tenth Michigan Cavalry, with which he served until the close of the war, being attached to the Army of the West.

Some little time after A. J. Cole's return from the army, and while engaged in the carpenter business at Jackson, he met Miranda E. Palmer. of Onondaga county. New York, who was visiting kinsfolk in Jackson. and, their marriage shortly followed. To this union two children were born, both sons, Fred J.,  and Leon, who died in infancy.

When the first-born of these sons was about one year old, in 1876, his parents moved from Jackson to Greenville and there have made their home since, long having been regarded as among the most highly-respected residents of that place. Mr. Cole followed his trade as a carpenter and builder at Greenville for about thirty-five years and has but lately retired from the active pursuits of life.

HURD, CHARLES T. : Merchant; born in Peoria. November 16, 1840 : son of Thomas and Sarah D. (Hall ) Hurd. His father was a native of New York, born May 25, 1810, and his mother at Stephentown, New York, February 20. 1813. Both the paternal and maternal ancestors were residents of New York and New England.  Thomas J. Hurd, who came to Peoria in the early thirties, was a carpenter by trade, but was engaged in the mercantile business in Peoria for several years previous to 1817. At the latter date he resumed carpentering and helped to build up the new city. Among some of the contracts that he filled was that for the old Peoria House.

In 1850 he sent a ship-load of lumber to San Francisco via Cape Horn, taking a shorter route himself via the Isthmus. He engaged extensively in contracting and building in San Francisco, but died in 1851. Mrs. Hurd was the daughter of' Judge Hall, of Rensselaer County. New York, coming to Peoria in 1837. After receiving a common-school education in Peoria. Charles T. Hurd went to Massachusetts and attended school at Lanesboro for two years, but afterward lived in Boston, where he held a position as cashier in a dry-goods store for one year. Returning to Peoria in 1861, he organized a wholesale paper house, associating with him .Asa Mayo and T. E. C. Wheeler.

In August 1862, at the age 21, he enlisted in Company A, Seventy-seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He took part in the battles at Vicksburg and Arkansas Post, but was afterwards transferred to the Signal Service Corps, a branch of the regular army, where he served as Sergeant till the close of the war.  After the surrender of Vicksburg he took part in the Red River Campaign and about Mobile. He was mustered out of service July 4, 1865, and returning to Peoria engaged in mercantile pursuits.

In 1869 he became a partner in the firm of Kingman & Company, agricultural implement dealers, where he remained three years. Subsequently he engaged in the manufacture of buttons from vegetable ivory, but discontinued in 1881 on account of the influence of tariff reduction on the business. Since then he has been a commercial traveler and is now manager of the Peoria Trading Association, a combination of Peoria merchants for advertising purposes. Mr. Hurd is an Independent Republican. He and his family are members of the Presbyterian Church.

Children. Kate Babcock Townsend ( 1843-1910 ), Richmond, Harrison, Mary J., and Cornealia Babcock.

Able Babcock was in the War of 1812, as a private in Captain Wentworth Knight's company, Massachusetts, Militia.  Enlisted September 18, 1814, discharged November 29, 1814.

Privateer Junius Brutus.

I received a nice letter from Jeanne Sandford, asking if I new anything about the Privateer Junius Bruius.  Of course I new nothing of the ship, but would look into it for her.

 

Well I found very little on the ship, but found a lot of names from the crew.  All who follow this site know how I like surnames.  I hope this information well help those looking into this ship.

Ship Junius Brutus, same tonnage and force. Privateer. On petition of Henry Rust and others of Salem, John Brooks commissioned commander June 19, 1782. Bond signed by Andrew Cabot and Henry Rust. The Junius Brutus was taken by an English cruizer in 1782 and carried into Newfoundland. October 17, 1782, a cartel arrived in Salem bringing the crew of the Junius Brutus. The capture of Junius Brutus.

Junius Brutus of Salem. This was a ship of 200 tons, carrying 20 guns and 120 men. On May 23, 1780, on petition of Joshua Ward and Henry Rust, John Leach was commissioned commander. She was afterwards commanded by John Brooks and later by Nathaniel Brookhouse, both of Salem, and while under command of the former had a well contested engagement with the English ship Experiment, lasting three glasses. The Experiment mounted 18 long sixes and carried the then very valuable cargo of 1500 barrels of flour. The Experiment finally surrendered with a loss of two killed and two wounded. The Junius Brutus during her privateer life sent 890 tons of prizes into Salem and was captured in the autumn of 1782 and sent in to Newfoundland.

Authors note. Although we know when the Junius Brutus was captured and what country capture her.  however there are no records on what happened before after or during the captured.

Illinois 96th., Infantry, Regimental History.

Sergeant Edward Malone. Age 34 ; born in Ireland ; butcher ; enlisted from Waukegan ; promoted to Corporal Jan. 16, 1863. as a recognition of his efficiency as a soldier, in apprehending and arresting two men who had attempted to desert from a Battery attached to the Brigade; promoted to Sergeant Dec. 1, 1864 ; at Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 19, 1864, was severely wounded in left leg, but rejoined the Regiment at Franklin, Tenn., Nov. 30, 1864; m. o. with Regiment. Was conspicuous for his courage, and a great favorite both during his service and after his return home ; died in Waukegan, Ill.., from heart disease, July 17, 1883. He was the wit and humorist of the Company, always ready with some original and side splitting remark to liven up the drooping spirits of the men, on "many a weary march and tented field"; he was a good soldier, always ready for duty, twice promoted for gallant conduct, and after his return home, living the life of an honorable, worthy citizen ; he died as he had lived, honored by all his comrades.

Surgeon General Files.

CASE 816. Private Tip Winans. Co. B., 28th Illinois, age 22 years, was wounded at the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862. Surgeon R. Nicholls, U. S. V., reported that he was "admitted to the hospital at Quiney. May 7, 1862, with a gunshot fracture of the neck of the left femur. The ball entered three inches below and two inches behind the anterior superior spinous process of the left ilium, passed through the bladder, and lodged in the region of the sacrum. Treatment by Buck s method."

This man was discharged from service December 6, 1862, with the accompanying remark over an illegible signature: Hip anchylosed; general health good. About the fracture as above, I have my doubts." The patient receives a pension. On February 6, 1872, Pension Examiner J. H. Ledlie reports, several pieces of dead bone have been removed. Some months since a tumor presented itself near the anus.

This suppurated, and upon opening it a large conical leaden ball was found, half of which was covered with what appeared to be the salts of the urine. Urine was freely discharged through the opening for several weeks. At present this is all healed. There is anchylosis of the hip-joint, shortening of the limb one inch and a half, atrophy of the whole limb, and constant pain along the sciatic nerve, which is much increased by walking." Disability is rated total and permanent.

Minnesota Fourth Infantry Regimental History.

p. 47-48, May 13, 1862, Tuesday. We passed Pittsburgh Landing at twelve o'clock. The steamboats Glendale and Silver Moon have steam calliopes, which play the tunes "Dixie'' and ",The Girl I Left Behind Me." This boat is not as large as the Roe, and our quarters are more cramped. Just after the boat touched the shore at Brown's Landing, Tenn., the men on both decks crowded forward and both decks broke down in front of the cabin, and about fifteen men were injured. Fully fifty men were precipitated to the lower deck, which was crowded with their comrades.

Captain White of Company F says : " I remember very well her breaking down, I was officer of the day that day, and in the Texas at the time, and told the pilot it was his fault in running on the bank so hard, and that if anyone was killed he would suffer for it." Mr. George Sly says: "I was sleeping on some cracker boxes on the cabin deck, and woke up down on the gang plank, the men crying 'Look out for, the bell.' I ran to the side of the boiler. Several men were wounded and one man was pushed 'overboard." That man was Anthony Capser of Company G, and in trying to save his gun from getting wet by holding it up, he was drowned."

p. 438, Mr. Sly says, under date of August 5, 1865.:

I left borne (Belle Flaine) with Colonel Edson and went down to Carver. Walked to Sbakopee. Went to J. L. McDonald's and stopped until Monday morning. Got on a boat and went to Fort Snelling. Got in a wagon and went to St. Paul. Signed the pay rolls. I was the only one of the drum corps who served the fall time.
