Charles H. Bell.

Push to enlarge.
Maine First Cavalry Regimental History.

Private Charles H. Bell, Jr., of Co. D, received a similar wound. He and George P. Andrews, of the same company, were on the skirmish line together, and were seeking partial shelter behind a low ridge. They would flatten themselves upon the ground while loading their pieces, then raise themselves upon their knees, with side to the enemy, and fire over the crest of the ridge. While Private Bell was thus shooting, an unfortunate shot from the enemy struck him in the other end of his prone body, and inflicted a severe wound. His manly pride, however, was superior to the pain of the wound, and in tones of despair, clapping his hand upon the wound, he exclaimed: "Oh, George! just my luck, shot where I can never speak of it ! "

Bell, Charles H., Jr., Age 19; res. Eastport; mus. Oct. 10, 1861, as private; orderly for Gen. Sturgess, '62; wound. at Shepardstown, July 16, 1863; re-enlisted. Feb. 1,18'64; promoted to corporal. March 1, 1864; wound. June 9, 1864; promoted to sergeant. 1864; mustered out. June 20, 1865.

Author. Burial: Veterans Memorial Grove Cemetery, Vountvill, Napa County, California.

Also note he may have a brother " Loring W. Bell", Same regiment and company. I have his picture as well.

I have no record when he came to Denison, Texas, but he was living there in 1873. He was the proprietor of the Charter Oak Billiard and Saloon, on Maine Street.

In 1880, he was still in Denison making a living as a Grocer and Liquor Dealer.  After 1880 I lost all track of the family.
