Ships, Steamers & Yachts 1776-1875.

I know there are some of you who had a ancestor on a ship and you know the name but, can not find any information on it. One reason is the ship may have changed it’s name. Here is a list of ships that I have information on, the list is in three category’s;

1. Schooners, Fishing schooners, boats and schooner turned into war ships.

2. Steamers.

3. Yachts.

Many of these ship names have never been heard of outside their time frame the information on them is very hard to find. Most of the information here is on the ship and it’s owners and captains, there is not much on the crews of these ships. If you see a name of a ship your ancestor was on or just interested in a ship and would like to know more about the ship, my address can be found in my profile.

Note. All these name came from Bills, petitions and letters from the library of Congress. Also note that the dates beside the names, are the dates of the Bills, petitions, and letters, of Congress.

I have relatives, John and George Clarke of Boston...Waterville, Maine. "Capt. John Clark and his son Geo. Clark had a shipyard, where in 1800 the ship Ticonic of 268 tons was built." HISTORY OF WATERVILLE

I have never found what happened to this ship, the second largest ever built in Waterville. Do you think they are one and the same?

I am confused by your date for the Steamer "Illinois". I have found numerous references to this ship in Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion, the first being on page 128 Series I Vol 7 where the ship is transferred from the War Dept to the US NAvy in 1862.
References continue sporadically up to page 798 in Volume 26 of the same Series (I) where she is referenced as a transport ship.

Dennis Segelquist said...

In the beginning of the page I stated that the dates were the year that said ship was named in a petition or bill. In December it was a Joint resolution authorizing the Secretary of War to place at the disposal of the commissioners of quarantine, or other proper authorities of the State of New York, the steamer Illinois, for quarantine purposes. Then in May of 1870, it became a Bill No. S. R. 198, this bill passed the Senate but I was unable to found out if it ever passed the House.

Dennis Segelquist said...

Sorry that was December of 1858.

Dennis,

My Grandmother has always told me that her grandmother came from Georgia but came on a boat called "The Little Mayflower" from some point in Alabama around the Gulf of Mexico to Texas and then rode another boat up the Sabine River to Jefferson,Texas all around 1875. Have you ever heard mention of this particular boat?

Dennis Segelquist said...

There were hundreds of ships named Mayflower. I took a look and was unable to find a ( Little Mayflower. )There was even a steamer in the civil war ( Union ) called the Mayflower.
