They Were Exchanged, Civil War.

This page is about the men that were exchanged, Union men for Confederates, and Confederate men for Union Men, it all depends which side was doing the exchanging. By looking over this list you will learn who was being exchanged and for who, not only that you will learn when and where they were sent.

Now there is a lot more information on these men then I have here, and the two examples below will show what kind of information is available. All Union men will be in blue and the Confederates in gray. If you see a name of interest you can write to me I will be glad to help you, my address can be found in my profile.

Example 1.

1. Asst. Surg. De Witt C. Peters, U. S. Army, released and forwarded to Fort Monroe, Va., November 19, 1861, in exchange for Asst. Surg. Wyatt M. Brown, who was forwarded to Norfolk, Va., November 12, 1861.

6. Captain W. L. Bowers, First Rhode Island Volunteers, released and forwarded to Fort Monroe, Va., January 15, 1862, in exchange for Captain Clements, Seventh [Seventeenth] North Carolina Volunteers.

7. Lieutenant S. R. Knight, First Rhode Island Volunteers, released and forwarded to Fort Monroe, Va., January 15, 1862, in exchange for Lieutenant Shannon, Seventh [Seventeenth] North Carolina Volunteers.

8. Thomas B. Griffin, released from Fort Warren and forwarded to Norfolk December 29, 1861, on his parole not to bear arms against the United States, but to be released from his parole in the event of his obtaining the discharge of a Federal prisoner of equal rank.

9. First Lieutenant A. E. Bell, North Carolina Volunteers, forwarded to Norfolk January 17, 1862, to be exchanged for First Lieutenant S. B. Preston, Fourth Michigan Regiment.

10. John W. Poole, adjutant Seventh [Seventeenth] North Carolina Volunteers, forwarded to Norfolk January 17, 1862, to be exchanged for Adjutant Peirson, Twentieth Massachusetts Volunteers. Adjutant Peirson sent to Old Point January 27.

11. First Lieutenant J. T. Lasselle, North Carolina Volunteers, forwarded to Norfolk January 17, 1862, to be exchanged for First Lieutenant M. A. Parks, First Michigan Volunteers. Lieutenant Parks sent to Old Point January 27.

12. Dr. R. W. Jeffery forwarded to Norfolk January 17, 1862, to be exchanged for Dr. William Fletcher. Doctor Fletcher sent to Old Point January 27.

13. Lieutenant T. H. Allen, North Carolina artillery, forwarded to Norfolk January 18, 1862, to be exchanged for First Lieutenant R. T. Frank, Eighth Infantry.

14. Lieutenant J. G. Moore, Seventh [Seventeenth] North Carolina Volunteers, forwarded to Norfolk January 18, 1862, to be exchanged for Second Lieutenant W. Booth, Second Wisconsin Volunteers. Lieutenant Bootint January 27.

15. Lieutenant N. H. Hughes, North Carolina Volunteers, forwarded to Norfolk January 18, 1862, to be exchanged for Second Lieutenant E. Connolly, Sixty-ninth New York Militia.
