Why on earth did so many men did at the hospital at Gallatin, Tn? My great grandfather, from the 87th Indiana, was discharged from there, and from the Army, the middle of January, 1863. He must have been one of the lucky ones. My understanding from my limited research is that this hospital was only about 108 beds. What happened there?

Many died of wounds while others died of diseases what kind I couldn't tell you. However the Hospital was called U. S. General ( Volunteers )and it had 108 beds.
