The Servant.
Not a lot is known about the waiters and servants of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812. Even though the waiter and servant seem friendly enough there was little trust between them and his master. Many of the homes at that time had secret passageways, so the master could hear the conversations of the servants. When a person of importance traveled he took his servant with him. Did this mean the servant was trusted, no the master always kept a watchful eye on him or her, many servants were thought to be spies, and the master was always watching their movements. Abigail Adams had this concerns about her husband John Adams servant. John Adams was little worried and tried to but his wife’s concerns at rest, he wrote in February of 1777, telling her not to worry:
Don't be uneasy about my Waiter. He behaves very well to me, and he has not the least Appearance of a Spy or a Deserter. He has not Curiosity, nor Activity nor sense enough for such a Character. He does his Duty extreamly well however in his station. But if he was a Spy he would learn nothing from me. He knows no more, from me, than the Horse he rides, nor shall he know I have no Conversation with him upon Politicks, nor shall he come to the Sight of Papers.
George Washington had a waiter in his military household by the name of Francis Jacobs, after Jacobs death his wife Catharine, asked Congress for a pension. She would receive eight dollars for life, she was living in Albany New York, at the time of her petition.
In December of 1780, William Sharpe, was having trouble finding a waiting servant he wrote to a business friend and told him of this troubles:
Dear Sir Philadelphia Decr. 26th. 1780 When I had the pleasure of being engaged with you in business more than a year ago, you may remember that I requested your aid in obtaining a good waiting Servant, having sold my former one for his misdemeanors and ever since have had an hired servant who has lately taken a notion & is gone a privateering, and am at present in a manner destitute. You will exceedingly oblige me if you will inform me by the first post whither one can be obtained, and on what terms. (Hard money I have none.) If it is not possible to get a good waiting man please let me know whether an honest farmer boy can be had & the terms, and perhaps he may be taught to make a waiter-honesty is the most necessary quallification. I am sorry to give you so much trouble but cannot get a good boy to purchase to the southward.
The servant was not always a men of color, some were soldiers, in a letter William Ellery wrote to Henry Jackson, in November 1778, telling him of his waiter:
The ride was rendered much more agreeable than it would have otherwise been, by the good behaviour of my waiter. Indeed Hayford's conduct was so very clever that it would give me much pleasure to hear that he was moved out of the rank of a common Soldier. I know nothing of his military abilities but if they are equal to his honesty and activity he certainly deserves promotion.
Lemuel Worster, praying a pension on account of a disability incurred while employed as a waiter to a militia officer in the United States service, during the last war with Great Britain.
In the seventeen hundreds some found it is was hard to keep a waiter, like William Ellery told William Greene, in a letter Of October of 1783:
Before I left Princeton I sent home one of my horses; when I got to Philadelphia I sent of[f] the other (if I could have sold them there would have been less necessity for this application) and I would have dismissed my waiter also had it been possible for Mr. Howell and myself to pass the winter with any degree of conveniency, not to mention decency, without a servant. The board and wages of my waiter has made and will make my expenses greater than those of my colleague.
In the 1780’s a persons in government was given 300 dollars per year for a waiter.
Frank Madison, a colored man who served as a waiter to Major Lee, of the army, in the Seminole war, in Florida, praying to be allowed a pension.
Andrew Montgomery, praying compensation for the service of a negro boy, whom he took as a waiter in the army, and who was captured by the hostile Creeks, in the late war, and remained out of his possession upwards of two years.

Don't be uneasy about my Waiter. He behaves very well to me, and he has not the least Appearance of a Spy or a Deserter. He has not Curiosity, nor Activity nor sense enough for such a Character. He does his Duty extreamly well however in his station. But if he was a Spy he would learn nothing from me. He knows no more, from me, than the Horse he rides, nor shall he know I have no Conversation with him upon Politicks, nor shall he come to the Sight of Papers.
George Washington had a waiter in his military household by the name of Francis Jacobs, after Jacobs death his wife Catharine, asked Congress for a pension. She would receive eight dollars for life, she was living in Albany New York, at the time of her petition.
In December of 1780, William Sharpe, was having trouble finding a waiting servant he wrote to a business friend and told him of this troubles:
Dear Sir Philadelphia Decr. 26th. 1780 When I had the pleasure of being engaged with you in business more than a year ago, you may remember that I requested your aid in obtaining a good waiting Servant, having sold my former one for his misdemeanors and ever since have had an hired servant who has lately taken a notion & is gone a privateering, and am at present in a manner destitute. You will exceedingly oblige me if you will inform me by the first post whither one can be obtained, and on what terms. (Hard money I have none.) If it is not possible to get a good waiting man please let me know whether an honest farmer boy can be had & the terms, and perhaps he may be taught to make a waiter-honesty is the most necessary quallification. I am sorry to give you so much trouble but cannot get a good boy to purchase to the southward.
The servant was not always a men of color, some were soldiers, in a letter William Ellery wrote to Henry Jackson, in November 1778, telling him of his waiter:
The ride was rendered much more agreeable than it would have otherwise been, by the good behaviour of my waiter. Indeed Hayford's conduct was so very clever that it would give me much pleasure to hear that he was moved out of the rank of a common Soldier. I know nothing of his military abilities but if they are equal to his honesty and activity he certainly deserves promotion.
Lemuel Worster, praying a pension on account of a disability incurred while employed as a waiter to a militia officer in the United States service, during the last war with Great Britain.
In the seventeen hundreds some found it is was hard to keep a waiter, like William Ellery told William Greene, in a letter Of October of 1783:
Before I left Princeton I sent home one of my horses; when I got to Philadelphia I sent of[f] the other (if I could have sold them there would have been less necessity for this application) and I would have dismissed my waiter also had it been possible for Mr. Howell and myself to pass the winter with any degree of conveniency, not to mention decency, without a servant. The board and wages of my waiter has made and will make my expenses greater than those of my colleague.
In the 1780’s a persons in government was given 300 dollars per year for a waiter.
Frank Madison, a colored man who served as a waiter to Major Lee, of the army, in the Seminole war, in Florida, praying to be allowed a pension.
Andrew Montgomery, praying compensation for the service of a negro boy, whom he took as a waiter in the army, and who was captured by the hostile Creeks, in the late war, and remained out of his possession upwards of two years.

Out of the sixteen names only two was ever paid. There will be no other information on these names, but for those looking for a ancestor of color, will find this information very helpful.

Virginia On this 21 day of August 1832 personally st appeared in open Court before the Justices of Amherst County now sitting, Jesse Beck a resident of the said County aged seventy four years who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832.
That he was born in the County of Albemarle in the State of Virginia sometime in the month of September 1758 as he has been informed by his Parents, but that he has no record of his age. That previous to the 1st March 1781 he performed two tours of service of three months each in the militia of Albemarle where he resided, and was employed at the Barracks in that County in guarding the British Prisoners. That 2d tour was in the character of a private soldier under the command of Capt James Garland who was killed by a sentinel at the Barracks whilst in that service. That his first tour at the Barracks was also in the character of a private in the company of a captain Hunter or Montgomery (which of the two he does not distinctly recollect.) That whilst at the Barracks Col [Francis] Taylor from the County of Orange was the commanding officer.
That he has no recollection of having rec’d. any written discharges from the said service if he did they have been lost. That about the first of March 1781 under some law of the state of Virginia a draft of every fourteenth man of the militia was directed, and the term of service eighteen months, that it fell to his lot to go in that service as one of the Militia of Albemarle, where he still resided and that he accordingly marched as a sergeant of a company under Capt Benjamin Harris from that County about the time aforesaid. That the company to which he was attached rendezvoused in the County of Hanover, where it was attached to a Reg’t commanded by Colo Thomas Posey and Major [Samuel] Finley.
That they served one campaign in Virginia and were at and took part in the seige and reduction of York Town [28 Sep - 19 Oct 1781], where he saw the army of Lord Cornwallis ground their arms. That after the reduction of that part the Reg’t to which his company was attached were marched to Cumberland old Court House in the state of Virginia where they took up their winter quarters. That in the month of Feby 1782 the corps to which he was attached were ordered on the Southern[?] service and that in the State of Georgia they joined the command of Gen’l. [Anthony] Wayne and continued under his command until the month of November of that year. Sometime in the last named month we were ordered to Virginia for the purpose and were discharged at Cumberland old Court House about the 1st Dec’r 1782.
That instead of serving the 18 months for which he was drafted, he was detained nearly 21 months That of this service he has a distinct recollection that there was given to each man as a bounty when he was drafted Four thousand dollars paper money, which from the great depreciation was of little value. This sum he rec’d from the hands of Colo Reuben Lindsey [Reuben Lindsay] then of the County of Albemarle, and that after his discharge from the said service he sold to the said Lindsey his certificate for pay due him to whom he surrendered the certificate, which certificate as well as his memory now serves him was all the written evidence of his said service or his discharge from it. That the command of Gen’l Wayne in the South to which he was attached had for its object the guarding of Savannah, where the British forces were quartered awaiting transport to carry them home [on 11 Jul 1782]. That the head quarters of
Gen’l. Wayne in the south and the encampment where the corps to which he was attached was stationed was at a place called Mulberry grove – property belonging to a tory, and was confiscated and sold with other confiscated property & purchased by Gen’l. Wayne.
That he has no documentary evidence to support his said claim for the said services, nor does he know of a single living witness by whom he could establish it. He does not know whether Colo Lindsey from whom he rec’d his bounty as aforesaid and to whom he sold his certificate as afores’d is living or dead.
That after the close of the war of the Revolution he resided two years in the County of Albemarle and then removed to the County of Amherst where he has continued to reside ever since. He relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state Jesse Beck Sen’r
NOTE: On 1 Apr 1843 Ann Beck, 77, applied for a pension stating that she was married to Jesse Beck by a Rev’d. Holt of the Church of England in Dec 1776, that their first child was born dead nine months afterwards, and that Jesse Beck died 11 May 1841. In the file is a copy of a bond signed on 4 Dec 1786 in Amherst County by Jesse Beck and John Camp for the marriage of Beck to Anny Hughes. With her application she submitted a family register, said by her and James C. Beck, 42, to be in Jesse Beck’s handwriting, which is transcribed as follows:

Hospital Steamer Crescent City, 1863.
Due to the massive numbers of sick and wounded soldiers in the U.S. Army, the U.S. States Sanitary Commission was created June 13, 1861 to assist the Army Medical Bureau. However, following the Battle of Wilson's Creek, every hospital ward in St. Louis was filled, and humane care of the wounded was lacking. As a result, the Union citizens of St. Louis with the help of Mrs. Jessie Benton Fremont and the St. Louis Ladies Union Aid Society made known their resolution to see that the government provide better health care of its sick and wounded west of the Mississippi. As a result, the Western Sanitary Commission was established on Sept. 5, 1861.
The following steamers were converted as floating hospitals and served as part of the Western Sanitary Commission hospital fleet : "City of Louisiana", set out on March 20, 1862, later renamed the "R. C. Wood"; the "D. A. January"; the "Empress"; the "Imperial"; the "Crescent City"; the "Red Rover"; the "City of Alton"; the "City of Memphis"; the "Nashville".
The following men are of the Iowa Infantry regiments, and died on the steamer

HEADQUARTERS THIRD IOWA INFANTRY,
July 6, 1863
COLONEL: I have the honor to submit the following report of the action of the THIRD Iowa Infantry on board the steamer Crescent City, May 18, 1863, with guerrillas, and the part taken by it during the siege of Vicksburg:
The regiment left Memphis, Tenn.,. May 17, 1863, in company with the other regiments composing the First Brigade, fourth DIVISION, SIXTEENTH Army Corps. Nothing of interest occurred until about 1 p. m. of the river, near Island Number 82, and about 3 miles above the town of Greeneville, MISS. The Crescent City, on which the regiment was embarked, was at the time about 1 mile in advance of the fleet. The enemy opened on the boat, when within 150 yards of the shore, with three pieces of artillery and a heavy fire of musketry. Two companies, who were on guard at the time, promptly returned the fire, but so sudden and unexpected was the attack, and so short its duration, that the regiment had but a poor opportunity to do much execution until the boat, that got beyond musket range.
We had one section of A. Schwartz'[battery on board, one piece of which was used with food effect on the battery on shore. We were at the time under the convoy of one of the boats of the Mosquito fleet,, which came up to our assistance, but not until the enemy were in full retreat. In this affair we lost 14 men wounded, a list of whom you will find appended. On the morning of the 19th, the regiment disembarked at Young's Point, and started toward the interior, but were immediately ordered back to re-embark for Snyder's Bluff, where we landed on the morning of the 20th. Here we remained until the 24th, when we received marching orders, and with the rest of the brigade proceeded to the rear of Vicksburg, and took position on the left of the besieging line, and became part of the investing g force. From this time up to the surrender of the place, on the 4th of July, the regiment took part in all the siege operations carried on in our front. The duty now was of the most arduous character, and calculated to put to the severest test the bravery and fortitude of the men. I shall only instance a few of the most important operations in which the regiment was engaged during the siege.
On the night of the 1st of June, companies F and G were supporting a section of the FIFTH Ohio Battery, which had been posted early in the evening in an advanced position. The enemy had detected the movement, and about 11 o'clock made a sortie in considerable force to capture the guns and their small support. Our men were on the alert for them, and twice repulse them; the last time when they had got up within 10 feet of the guns, which played havoc in the ranks with canister. On the evening of the 4th, of June, a portion of the regiment on picket duty on the left of the brigade line, crossing of parrots of Companies A, b, d, f, and H, with 20 men and 1 commissioned officer of the Thirty-THIRD Wisconsin Regiment, numbering in all about 150, were ordered to advance and drive the enemy from his line of rifle pits on the crest of a ridge south of the Hall's Ferry road and about 300 yards in our front. At the signal, the men rushed forward with a deafening, cheer, under a heavy fire of musketry and artillery, and in less than FIFTEEN minutes we had gained the crest and driven the enemy from their pits and into their works beyond, from which five pieces of artillery continued shelling us for about half an hour; but from the advantageous position we had gained,, their MISSILES fell harmless, owing to the fact that he enemy's aim was too high. We lost but 2 men wounded in the engagement.
On the nigh of the 24th of June, 200 men of the regiment were sent to the trenches, under the command of Major G. W. Crosley, as a working party. On their arrival at the trenches about 10 p. m., the guards were stationed in advance of the rifle-pits to guard the working party, which was engaged in digging a sap toward the main fort in our front. The night was dark, and a slight rain falling just as the men had got fairly to work, the guard in front were fiercely attacked and driven in, and the enemy advance in force and demanded a surrounded. Our men seized their arms, sprang to their places in the trenches, and delivered a terrific fire, causing the enemy no falter and then fall back about 75 yards, from which they continued to fire with both musket and artillery for about three-fourths of an hour, our men responding with energy, and getting the last shot. Our loss was 1 man killed and 2 slightly wounded. The enemy's loss, as we afterward ascertained, was 15 killed and wounded, including the colonel commanding, who was killed.

Nothing of interest occurred until about 1 p. m. of the river, near Island Number 82, and about 3 miles above the town of Greeneville, MISS. The Crescent City, on which the regiment was embarked, was at the time about 1 mile in advance of the fleet. The enemy opened on the boat, when within 150 yards of the shore, with three pieces of artillery and a heavy fire of musketry. Two companies, who were on guard at the time, promptly returned the fire, but so sudden and unexpected was the attack, and so short its duration, that the regiment had but a poor opportunity to do much execution until the boat, that got beyond musket range.
We had one section of A. Schwartz'[battery on board, one piece of which was used with food effect on the battery on shore. We were at the time under the convoy of one of the boats of the Mosquito fleet,, which came up to our assistance, but not until the enemy were in full retreat. In this affair we lost 14 men wounded, a list of whom you will find appended. On the morning of the 19th, the regiment disembarked at Young's Point, and started toward the interior, but were immediately ordered back to re-embark for Snyder's Bluff, where we landed on the morning of the 20th. Here we remained until the 24th, when we received marching orders, and with the rest of the brigade proceeded to the rear of Vicksburg, and took position on the left of the besieging line, and became part of the investing g force. From this time up to the surrender of the place, on the 4th of July, the regiment took part in all the siege operations carried on in our front. The duty now was of the most arduous character, and calculated to put to the severest test the bravery and fortitude of the men. I shall only instance a few of the most important operations in which the regiment was engaged during the siege.
On the night of the 1st of June, companies F and G were supporting a section of the FIFTH Ohio Battery, which had been posted early in the evening in an advanced position. The enemy had detected the movement, and about 11 o'clock made a sortie in considerable force to capture the guns and their small support. Our men were on the alert for them, and twice repulse them; the last time when they had got up within 10 feet of the guns, which played havoc in the ranks with canister. On the evening of the 4th, of June, a portion of the regiment on picket duty on the left of the brigade line, crossing of parrots of Companies A, b, d, f, and H, with 20 men and 1 commissioned officer of the Thirty-THIRD Wisconsin Regiment, numbering in all about 150, were ordered to advance and drive the enemy from his line of rifle pits on the crest of a ridge south of the Hall's Ferry road and about 300 yards in our front. At the signal, the men rushed forward with a deafening, cheer, under a heavy fire of musketry and artillery, and in less than FIFTEEN minutes we had gained the crest and driven the enemy from their pits and into their works beyond, from which five pieces of artillery continued shelling us for about half an hour; but from the advantageous position we had gained,, their MISSILES fell harmless, owing to the fact that he enemy's aim was too high. We lost but 2 men wounded in the engagement.
On the nigh of the 24th of June, 200 men of the regiment were sent to the trenches, under the command of Major G. W. Crosley, as a working party. On their arrival at the trenches about 10 p. m., the guards were stationed in advance of the rifle-pits to guard the working party, which was engaged in digging a sap toward the main fort in our front. The night was dark, and a slight rain falling just as the men had got fairly to work, the guard in front were fiercely attacked and driven in, and the enemy advance in force and demanded a surrounded. Our men seized their arms, sprang to their places in the trenches, and delivered a terrific fire, causing the enemy no falter and then fall back about 75 yards, from which they continued to fire with both musket and artillery for about three-fourths of an hour, our men responding with energy, and getting the last shot. Our loss was 1 man killed and 2 slightly wounded. The enemy's loss, as we afterward ascertained, was 15 killed and wounded, including the colonel commanding, who was killed.

What The Rosters Didn't Say.
When one is looking for a ancestor or a name interest who was a soldier in the Civil War. We begin by looking for his regiment roster. Now these rosters give us some information which is important to know to be sure, but for the most part their incomplete. It’s not the fault of the researcher, it comes down to the lack space. Because of the lack of space we are face with jumping from web site to web site, looking for more information.
Some of us will give up after finding the same information over and over again. There are many web sites that could be a gold mine of information if you just keep looking and don’t give up. Case in point is the following information.
This information come from the records of the Seventh Pennsylvania Cavalry. I will cover all companies, but here again because of the lack space I will only pick a few names of interest from each company. I well first give the information from the roster, then in a ( note ) I will add the information that was not found on the rosters.

Most of the names not only give their military record, They also give the place of residence and the date of their of death and place of their burial . Now all will not have this extra information but many will.
Some of us will give up after finding the same information over and over again. There are many web sites that could be a gold mine of information if you just keep looking and don’t give up. Case in point is the following information.

Most of the names not only give their military record, They also give the place of residence and the date of their of death and place of their burial . Now all will not have this extra information but many will.
