I haven't done a surname name list in a long wile, so I decided to do one on the Hodges. These Hodges are all Confederate Soldiers from Georgia. This post covers a lot of the Georgia Regiments. .

Approximately ten Hodges names are not listed.  They were unable to be obtained, be cause of copyright laws.

Arvin C. Bemis was born in Chester, VT. His parents were Lewis Chester Bemis and Achash Philena (Thompson) Bemis. Arvin C. Bemis was staying at the Soldiers' Home in Togus, Me. but came to North Adams to spend a short furlough. After having eaten a hearty breaksfast, Arvin C. Bemis a veteran of the Civil War was found dead in a chair in his room at the Mansion house on State Street.

After an investigation, the Medical Examiner declared death was due to acute indigestion. His age at the time of his death was believed to be about 75 years old. Mr. Bemis was an inmate of the Soldiers' Home on three different occasions, each time being discharged at his own request and then being readmitted. He gave as his nearest relative a brother, John Bemis of Gassetts (Chester), VT.

He enlisted at Charlestown, NH on August 7, 1861 in Co. G, 5th Reg. NH Inf. He was discharged from the Soldiers' Home at Togus at his own request on September 24, 1907, was readmitted on April 14, 1911, discharged again on his own request on December 12, 1912, and readmitted on July 14, 1915. On June 17th he left on a 90 day furlough, stating that he was going to North Adams, MA. Mr. Bemis' body was shipped to Gassett, VT on the 12:30 o'clock train on June 28, 1919 to Mr. Bemis' nephew, who was located through the efforts of the Medical Examiner.

Henry O Moreland and his wife, Fannie Oliver Moreland, have CSA pension applications on line, courtesy of GA virtual vault. He says he was born 1840 in Tenn. He enlisted in Co. B of the 6th GA regiment and was paroled at Greeensboro N. C. after the surrender. They married 21 Oct 1892 in Dade county and Henry died 1/9/1917. (Sometimes memory is not quite accurate...or families of the deceased make mistakes on monuments- hard to tell which date is correct.)

US Senator. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Thomas Jefferson and Flora Crudup Battle Turley. After attending public schools, Thomas in 1861 enlisted and served in the Maynard Rifles of Memphis, a Confederate company that joined the 154th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Turley sustained wounds at the battles of Shiloh (1862) and Atlanta (1864) before being captured in the Battle of Nashville in 1864. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, from December 1864 until March 1865.

Upon the war's conclusion, he attended the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia, completing his studies in 1867. In 1870 he was admitted to the Tennessee bar and began practicing in Memphis with L. D. McKissick, a former Confederate colonel. When former Governor Isham G. Harris teamed with them in 1876, the firm became Harris, McKissick & Turley. A prominent attorney, upon the death in office of Senator Harris in 1897, Turley was appointed by the governor of Tennessee to the vacancy.

He was subsequently elected to the balance of the term by the Tennessee General Assembly. Turley declined to stand for any further service in the Senate once the balance of the term to which Harris had initially been elected had expired, serving in the Senate from July 20, 1897 to March 4, 1901. He returned to his Memphis law practice until shortly before his death in 1910. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, the final resting place of many West Tennessee political figures.

In the battle of Franklin none occupied a more exposed position than the Nineteenth, and none more fully accomplished all that could be asked of flesh and blood. Its right rested on the west side of the Co- lumbia turnpike. Charging across the plain, the enemy were driven from their breastworks. Several men of the regiment clambered over them in the face of the enemy concentrated behind the buildings a few yards distant. Finding them- selves between two tires, they sought such protection as was afforded. Sergeant Lum. Waller, of Co. E, than whom no truer man lives, was wounded at the end of Carter's brick smoke-house by the fire of our own men the enemy firing from the opposite end  and lay there all night. This building still stands, bearing the marks of over one hundred bullets. Here fell our beloved brigade commander, Gen. Strahl. He died upon the enemy's works about midway of the Nineteenth Regiment. During the engagement he took gun after gun from the men below and fired at the enemy. A private of Co. A, Zack Smith by name, whom Gen. Strahl had punished for some act of insubordination, seeing the General on the works and firing at the Federals, scrambled up to his side, and as the General fired he fired. Military Service.

Company E., Dixie Rifles, organized at Moscow, Tennessee, and composed of Tennesseeans and Mississippians; Captain A. J. Vaughan, Marshall county, Mississippi.

CAPT. A. J. VAUGHAN. Elected Lieutenant-Colonel at or ganization of the regiment; elected Colonel on resignation of Col. Wright; re-elected Colonel at reorganization of the army at Corinth ; promoted to Brigadier- General after the battle of Chickamauga; lost a leg at Yining station, below Marietta, Ga., on July 4, 1864; Memphis, Tenn.

Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. When the South declared secession from the Union in 1861, he at once raised volunteers for the Confederacy and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th Tennessee. He gained the reputation of a fighting officer, engaging in all the battles at Belmont, Shiloh, Richmond, Perryville, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Promoted Brigadier General in November 1863, his brigade took part in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign. At the Battle of Vining Station, July 4, 1864, his leg was taken off by an exploding shell and he was permanently disabled for military duty. After the war he engaged in farming and was elected clerk of the criminal court, Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1878.

Elias Warner, aged 87 years, a retired farmer of near Pleasant Hill, died on Saturday night at Montevue Hospital where he had been a boarding patient for some months. For six years he had been at the Fahrney Memorial Home, Washington county. He was a veteran of the Civil war, a member of Third New York Cavalry. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George S. Martz, Pleasant Hill, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at home of his daughter. Interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Thomas P. Rice, funeral director.

  Peter Cupp, Private; Age 18; Enlisted September 7, 1861, for 3 years; Captured at the battle of Stone River, Tennessee, December 31, 1862; Paroled February 27, 1863; Mustered out September 20, 1864.

On the morning of June 18th, the Eebels having withdrawn, a party of three or four men advanced to reconnoiter, and picking up a couple of stragglers they were sent back in charge of Peter Cupp, a private of company H, who, in returning to the regiment, suddenly came upon a Eebel outpost which had been left by accident. Cupp announced the withdrawal to them and ordered them to stack their arms and surrender, which they did, and one captain, one lieutenant and sixteen men of the First Georgia Volunteers, were marched into our lines bv private Cupp. While in the vicinity the regiment was engaged in scouting and skirmishing, frequently capturing prisoners.

He was in the First Virginia Cavalry, Co. K., Private.  I don't know when he was admitted, but in 1894 he was in the Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers Home, died there in 1913.  He had at lest one son Thomas L. Clinton.
